Bonjour la langue

Un uomo si ferma alla stazione di Draguignan, nel sud della Francia, e si presenta a sorpresa nel vialetto della villa dove vive il padre, che non vede da sei anni. Sarà un confronto acceso a colpi di amore, odio, nostalgia e tenerezze.
L’ultimo film di Paul Vecchiali è uno dei più bei film del 2023, un candido testamento che con dei dialoghi accesi e trepidanti accende i fari su un melodramma dell’intimità, scandito dalle frasi e dagli sguardi dei due interpreti. Se negli occhi di Cervo si vede il doppio motore dell’attrazione e della repulsione per un padre mai accomodante, nei volti di Vecchiali si vedono la sua intera carriera, i suoi primi piani infuocati e i suoi amori impossibili. Un lungo dialogo appassionante, un buongiorno al linguaggio, un augurio che possa tornare ad essere comunicazione e abbraccio.

Paul Vecchiali’s latest film is one of the most beautiful films of 2023, a candid testament that, with lively and trembling dialogues, turns the spotlight on a melodrama of intimacy, punctuated by the sentences and the looks of the two main actors. If in Cervo’s eyes we can see the double engine of attraction and repulsion for a never accommodating father, in Vecchiali’s faces we can see his entire career, his fiery close-ups and his impossible loves. A long passionate dialogue, a good morning to language, a wish that it can return to being communication and embrace.

Coupon - Il film della felicità

Andrea è un uomo di altri tempi, o piuttosto fuori dal tempo: un solitario e sognatore, vive la sua vita come se fosse un film in bianco e nero, perennemente “fuori sincrono” con il mondo che lo circonda. In un torrido pomeriggio d’agosto, s’avventura con la bici in una Roma semi deserta, popolata da qualche studente superstite e molti anziani che non possono permettersi la villeggiatura. Andrea intende raggiungere un supermercato dove acquistare le scatolette di tonno con cui continuare ad accumulare punti che gli faranno vincere il misterioso “Coupon della felicità”. Le scatolette di tonno però si accumulano nella sua dispensa, come pure i coupon, ma la felicità si può davvero comprare?
Tra gli interpreti anche Milena Vukotic e il politico Pierluigi Bersani che si moltiplica in più personaggi, in un mini-musicarello semi-muto su un personaggio goffo ma puro, che non sa esprimersi se non cantando, e che vuole vincere una felicità promessa dalle insegne e dalle pubblicità di una città incendiata, trascurata, poetica.

Andrea is an old-fashioned man and he doesn’t seem to be in touch with his own time. He’s a loner and a dreamer, he lives his life as if he was stuck in a black and white film, perpetually "out of sync" with the world around him. On a scorching August afternoon, he ventures on his bike into a semi-deserted Rome, populated by a few surviving students and many elderly people who cannot afford the holiday. Andrea wants to go to a supermarket where he can buy cans of tuna to collect points that will allow him to win the mysterious "Happiness Coupon". The tuna cans accumulate in his cupboard, as do the coupons, but can we really buy happiness?
Among the performers there are also Milena Vukotic and the politician Pierluigi Bersani who plays multiple roles, in a semi-silent mini-musical about an awkward but pure character, who cannot express himself except by singing, and who wants to win the happiness that signs and advertisements promise to him, in a burnt-out, neglected, poetic city.

Baldiga – Entsichertes Herz

Berlino Ovest 1979. Jürgen Baldiga, figlio di un minatore di Essen, si è appena trasferito in città con l’obiettivo di diventare un artista. Lavora come cuoco, scrive poesie, tiene un diario e si avvicina alla fotografia nel 1984. Affetto da HIV, utilizza le foto per fermare il tempo e catturare la realtà. I suoi ritratti mostrano amici, amanti, sesso selvaggio, la vita di strada e le ragazze del club gay SchwuZ che diventano la sua famiglia adottiva.
Tra disperazione e desiderio, ribellione e irrefrenabile volontà di sopravvivere, Baldiga diventa un cronista della sottocultura di Berlino Ovest, nonostante la malattia lo condanni a una morte quasi certa. Quando muore nel 1993 all'età di trentaquattro anni lascia migliaia di fotografie e quaranta diari. L’eredità artistica unica di un artista radicale e complesso e di un attivista impegnato contro la stigmatizzazione degli stili di vita gay.

He works as a chef, writes poetry, keeps a diary and approaches photography in 1984. Affected by HIV, he uses photos to freeze time and capture reality. His photos portray friends, lovers, wild sex, street life and the lush girls of the gay club SchwuZ who become his adoptive family.
Between desperation and desire, rebellion and absolute will to survive, Baldiga becomes a chronicler of the West Berlin subculture despite his disease condemning him to certain death. When he died in 1993 at the age of thirty-four, he left behind thousands of photographs and forty diaries. The unique artistic legacy of a radical and complex artist and an activist committed against the stigmatization of gay lifestyles.

Casa Preti: Carmina 8/10

Quella che ha tutta l’apparenza di una famiglia tradizionale – madre, padre, figlio, figlia – si aggira per le sale di una villa baronale nei pressi di Monte Pellegrino, a Palermo: guarda dalla finestra, legge il giornale, annaffia le piante. Il costante confronto con oggetti, sculture e dipinti però scatena qualcos’altro, un altro ritratto di famiglia, libero e diverso.
Un fashion film di fantasmi e idee di convivenza, commissionato dalla casa di moda Casa Preti. Un lavoro che allarga i confini dei formati, e restituisce tattilità e umori passionali tramite la ripresa in pellicola. Un luogo di incontro, pittorico e quasi metafisico, un’invasione che diventa dialogo, altre possibilità per lo spazio e per i corpi in 7 minuti sospesi nel tempo.

Désir et rébellion : L'art de la joie - Goliarda Sapienza

Nel 1976 Goliarda Sapienza, una sconosciuta scrittrice siciliana, termina un romanzo di 800 pagine, L’arte della gioia. È il racconto di una vita, quella di Modesta, nata l’1 gennaio 1900 su un versante dell'Etna, da una famiglia povera dalla quale cerca di emanciparsi per tutta la vita, trasgredendo ogni legge per realizzare i suoi desideri. Per vent'anni l’autrice subisce rifiuti da parte di tutte le case editrici italiane. La storia della sua sensuale eroina, raccontata nella lotta contro il fascismo e il patriarcato, non trova un pubblico nemmeno nell’Italia degli anni ’80, e Goliarda Sapienza muore di infarto nel 1996 senza vedere mai pubblicato il suo romanzo.
Il documentario di Coralie Martin ci offre un incontro inedito con la scrittrice e con la sua eroina ribelle, Modesta, mettendo a nudo la carica rivoluzionaria, sovversiva e perfino scandalosa di questo capolavoro imprescindibile della letteratura del XX secolo. Le traiettorie di queste due donne desideranti si nutrono della stessa carica emancipativa: la gioia di scrivere la propria vita.

In 1976 Goliarda Sapienza, an unknown Sicilian writer, finishes an 800-page novel, L’arte della gioia. It’s the story of a life, Modesta’s life, born on 1st January 1900 on a slope of the vulcano Etna from a poor family whom she tries to emancipate herself from throughout her life, transgressing every law to realize her desires. For twenty years the author has suffered rejections from all Italian publishing houses. The story of her sensual heroine, told capturing her fight against fascism and patriarchy, still doesn’t get an audience in 1980s Italy, and Goliarda Sapienza dies of a heart attack in 1996, having never seen her novel published.
This documentary by Coralie Martin offers us an unprecedented encounter with Goliarda Sapienza and her rebellious heroine Modesta, to reveal the revolutionary, subversive and even scandalous charge of this essential literature masterpiece of the 20th century. The trajectories of these two desiring women intertwine heading to the same emancipatory power: the joy of writing about their own life.

Celeste, Giorgia e Letizia vogliono essere protagoniste della scena ballroom, la mitica sottocultura LGBTQ in cui le attività performative spesso coinvolgono drag queen, drag king e altri membri della comunità queer. Le tre donne sono cisgender, ma il mondo ballroom permette loro di esprimere il loro corpo senza giudizi e pregiudizi, permette loro di crescere e di intraprendere le scelte più importanti per loro stesse: restare nei sobborghi di Torino, o partire.
Un documentario che inquadra il mondo ballroom come luogo di attraversamento, di crescita e di autodeterminazione per chiunque voglia indagare i confini dei propri comportamenti più guidati (e inquinati) dagli stereotipi di genere. La prospettiva è insolita anche per chi conosce a fondo la sottocultura protagonista del film, trova modi nuovi di indagarla, a costo della dissonanza ma nel guadagno collettivo del dialogo e della dialettica, nella cornice della ricerca della felicità di tre donne sognatrici.

The three women are cisgender, but the ballroom world allows them to express their bodies without judgment and prejudice, it allows them to grow and make the most important choices for themselves: staying in the suburbs of Turin or leaving.
A documentary that frames the ballroom world as a place of crossing, growth, and self-determination for anyone who wants to investigate the boundaries of their behaviours, the ones most guided (and polluted) by gender stereotypes. The perspective is unusual even for those who know the subculture that is protagonist of the film in depth, because About Last Year finds new ways to investigate it, at the cost of dissonance but with the collective gain of dialogue and dialectics, in the frame of the search for happiness of three dreaming women.

Un prince

Pierre-Joseph si iscrive a un corso di formazione per diventare giardiniere. È lì che incontra una serie di personaggi: Françoise Brown, la preside, Alberto il suo insegnante di botanica, Adrien il suo datore di lavoro, tutti decisivi per il suo percorso di formazione nonché per la scoperta della sua sessualità. Quarant'anni dopo appare Kutta, il figlio adottivo di cui Françoise Brown ha sempre sentito parlare e che non ha mai incontrato. Ma Kutta, divenuto proprietario di uno strano castello, sembra cercare qualcosa di diverso da un semplice giardiniere.
Ancora una volta Pierre Creton realizza un film intimo e anticonformista, la storia di un giovane uomo che si perde in un giardino labirintico di passioni e sentimenti da esplorare in sintonia con la natura. L'incontro tra i corpi desideranti esclude il dialogo mentre le voci fuori campo – qui di Françoise Lebrun, Grégory Gadebois e Mathieu Amalric – ci dicono qualcos'altro, creano una dissonanza e affrontano l'oscurità delle storie dei corpi che si intrecciano come piante lussureggianti che chiedono solo di crescere senza incontrare ostacoli.

There he meets a series of characters: Françoise Brown, the headmistress, Alberto, his botany teacher, and Adrien, his employer, all of whom will play a decisive role in his apprenticeship story, and open him up to his sexuality. Forty years later, Kutta, Françoise Brown’s adopted child, whom she has always heard about but never met, shows up. But Kutta, who has become the owner of a strange château, seems to be looking for more than just a gardener.
Once again Pierre Creton realizes an intimate and unconventional film, the story of a young man who gets lost in a labyrinthine garden of passions and feelings to be explored in harmony with nature. Intertwined bodies overflowing with desire excludes dialogue while the off-screen voices – here by Françoise Lebrun, Grégory Gadebois and Mathieu Amalric – tell us something else, create a dissonance and reveal the dark side of the stories of the bodies that intertwine like lush plants seeking for growing without restrictions.

Thea abita nella negoziazione costante tra la propria fame sessuale e una realtà in cui esiste la vera fame, il ciclo, l’incomunicabilità linguistica. In un mondo in cui i desideri si propagano come spore, è possibile farsi rapire da un attacco di fame durante una sessione di bondage, può capitare che la bartender che ci attrae si manifesti in casa propria per mangiare una pesca, e può anche essere che si identifichi come un vampiro amante delle mestruazioni.
Accarezzando prospettive post-porno, Marie Luise Lehner progetta una spedizione cinematografica negli spazi in ombra del corpo di Thea. Lì, l’unico modo per orientarsi e immaginare un’altra sessualità è utilizzare gli strumenti vietati per l’esplorazione erotica: l’ironia e la sonorità, forti del proprio potere di desacralizzare e ritornare ai sensi.

Thea inhabits the constant negotiation between her own sexual hunger and a reality in which there is real hunger, the menses, and linguistic incommunicability. In a world where desires propagate like spores, it is possible to be kidnapped by a hunger attack during a bondage session, it may happen that the bartender we are attracted to manifests herself in one's home to eat a peach, and it may even be that she identifies herself as a menstruation-lover vampire.
Caressing post-porn perspectives, Marie Luise Lehner plans a cinematic expedition into the shadowy spaces of Thea's body. One Night at Babes

Un locale di nome Babes nel Vermont accoglie chiunque voglia sentirsi a casa, qualsiasi sia l’età, l’apparenza, l’orientamento sessuale. Un’oasi di partite di carte, di karaoke e di feste queer da ballo; un’occasione, per i più anziani e i più giovani, di trovare un punto di contatto intergenerazionale nel desiderio della libera espressione.
Il caloroso documentario di Angelo Madsen Minax su una vecchia stazione di treni trasformata in dive bar nel 2017 è non solamente l’occasione per illustrare la possibilità di essere sé stessi in un contesto rurale a cui di rado si associa la voglia di rompere gli schemi, ma è anche un’inedita esplorazione di un’eterotopia in cui è possibile fare comunità. Forza strenua e strategica contro l’incalzare di omofobia e di inneggi all’odio che investano anche nel presente gli Stati Uniti da nord a sud.

Angelo Madsen Minax’s warm documentary about a bygone train station transformed into a dive bar in 2017 is not only a chance to show the possibility of being yourself in a rural context which is rarely associated with the desire to break the mold, but it is also an unprecedented exploration of a heterotopia in which it is possible to create community. A strenuous and strategic force against the spread of homophobia and of chants of hatred which are also affecting the United States in the present, from north to south.

Ancora di più, un corpo in più. Uno slogan, uno stendardo che sorregge da sé un montaggio singolare, pensato per un’installazione e rielaborato in forma di proiezione canonica con un triplo split screen, per raccontare militanze, riunioni, manifestazioni, dibattiti, interviste all’inizio degli anni Novanta in Francia, in epoca di diffusione dell’AIDS e di urgente necessità di sensibilizzazione sul tema.
La rielaborazione grafica e musicale delle immagini puntella e riadatta la mastodontica quantità di materiale che Lionel Soukaz ha raccolto nei suoi Journal Annales, restituendo un’energia che lo spettro della malattia non è in grado di dissipare. Un frammento densissimo e intenso di una testimonianza decennale, gestito dal montatore-autore Stéphane Gérard nella necessità di “andare avanti e indietro tra azioni pubbliche e elaborazioni private, costruendo continuità tra incontri e manifestazioni per riflettere al meglio l’operato degli attivisti”.

Even more, a body more. A slogan, a banner that supports a singular montage, designed for an installation and reworked in the form of a canonical projection with a triple split screen, to tell the story of militancy, meetings, demonstrations, debates, interviews at the beginning of the nineties in France, in the era of the spread of AIDS and the urgent need to raise awareness on the topic.
The graphic and musical reworking of the images supports and adapts the gigantic quantity of material that Lionel Soukaz collected in his Journal Annales, restoring an energy that the specter of the disease is unable to dissipate. A very dense and intense fragment of a ten-year testimony, managed by the editor-author Stéphane Gérard in the need to “go back and forth between public actions and private elaborations, building continuity between meetings and demonstrations to best reflect the work of the activists”.

Indignati per il bombardamento di Gaza del 2021, gli attivisti queer palestinesi Hamza e Walid reclutano il romanziere Jean Genet per sabotare l’Eurovision a Gerico con l'aiuto di Buddy e Pedro, i famosi pinguini gay nudi di Toronto. L’affermarsi del queer BDS (boicottaggio, disinvestimenti, sanzioni) come movimento globale guidato dai palestinesi emerge attraverso interviste e azioni, opere liriche e agitprop, proteste e scherzi.
Raccontando quindici anni di appassionato attivismo a Toronto e in tutto il mondo, Photo Booth giustappone una narrazione operistica surreale a scene documentaristiche che ci mostrano gay Pride e pinkwashing, soldati gay e omonazionalismo. Gli attivisti queer Ghadir Shafie, Judith Butler, Ali Abunimah e altri raccontano le vittorie e le battute d'arresto di questo movimento emergente per la giustizia sociale. Genet si trasforma in un attivista digitale che cerca di farsi strada attraverso le diverse sfide di megafoni e cabine fotografiche, musica dodecafonica e schermo diviso, frisbee e gas lacrimogeni, Gaga e Gaza, solidarietà e silenzio.

Les tortues

Da quando Thom, ex drag queen, e Henri, agente di polizia, si sono incontrati trentacinque anni fa, il loro amore non ha mai vacillato. Ma la vita apparentemente perfetta che si erano costruiti a Bruxelles inizia a mostrare segni di crisi quando Henri va in pensione, e le sue giornate sembrano allungarsi all’infinito. Nonostante i litigi, però, Thom non sarà disposto ad arrendersi e farà di tutto per salvare la sua relazione e rivitalizzare il loro amore, anche a costo di chiedere il divorzio al marito.
Il regista David Lambert affronta il tema della crisi di una vecchia coppia ritraendola mentre i due litigano, si lamentano, si fanno dispetti, ma anche mentre condividono momenti di dolcezza e tenerezza come potrebbe avvenire in una commedia con Katherine Hepburn e Spencer Tracy come interpreti. E i due attori protagonisti, Olivier Gourmet e Dave Johns, offrono una performance mozzafiato.

Director David Lambert tackles the theme of the crisis of an old couple by portraying them while they argue, complain, tease each other but also while they share moments of sweetness and tenderness as it could happen in a comedy starring Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy as protagonists. And the two lead actors, Olivier Gourmet and Dave Johns, deliver a breathtaking performance.

Leisure, Utopic

Bernadette Mayer ha pubblicato più di trenta testi fra poesie e saggi fra il 1968 e il 2021, prima di morire nel 2022. In Utopia, del 1984, immagina un mondo alternativo, un’ucronia senza malattie, senza soldi, in cui le porte sono tutte grandi e le finestre sono tutte aperte. Una donna fa leggere al proprio figlio una versione editata della poesia, istruendolo sugli errori di pronuncia e disegnando, con uno schizzo surreale improvviso, cosa potrebbe voler dire utopia 40 anni dopo.
Beatrice Gibson modella in due minuti una nuova chance per l’immagine e per la poesia al cinema. Leisure, Utopic è un haiku di speranza perché ogni individuo nel mondo abbia una storia, come alla fine della poesia di Mayer: “even me”.

L’aspirante designer di giochi Alejandro si trasferisce a New York City insieme alle sue insolite idee sulla vita, oltre che ai ricordi di infanzia del suo paese d’origine, San Salvador. Quando il suo visto di residenza sta per scadere, Alejandro trova una possibile soluzione collaborando con la stralunata curatrice d’arte Elizabeth, che vuole realizzare una mostra con le opere del marito, artista ossessionato dalle uova. Sarà l’inizio di un viaggio delirante fra le strade della grande metropoli.
L’esilarante esordio alla regia del giovane attore Julio Torres (già voce per il candidato all’Oscar come Miglior Film d’Animazione Nimona) è un viaggio surreal-burocratico fra uffici, mostre d’arte e funivie, funambolico racconto di formazione e grande esercizio di bravura per Tilda Swinton nei panni di Elizabeth, mattatrice e punta di diamante di una nuova commedia targata A24, incrocio impossibile tra Charlie Kaufman e Wes Anderson.

It will be the beginning of a delirious journey through the streets of the great metropolis.
The exhilarating diretorial debut of the young actor Julio Torres (already the voice for the Academy Awards nominee for Best Animated Film Nimona) is a surreal-bureaucratic journey between offices, art exhibitions and cable cars, an acrobatic coming-of-age and a great exercise of actorial skill for Tilda Swinton in the role of Elizabeth, absolute star and spearhead of a new comedy by A24, an impossible crossing between Charlie Kaufman and Wes Anderson.

We Should All Be Futurists

Nei primi anni del Novecento, in un carteggio enigmatico, Rosa confida all’amica Giorgina che l'uomo-macchina di cui parla Marinetti non è un futuro che riguarda i soli uomini, come dicono i futuristi. È un fatto presente e concreto per le donne, che Giorgina e le altre possono ricevere “per posta”.
L’ironia e il capovolgimento dei codici e dogmi culturali sono il fondamento di We Should All Be Futurists, che racconta con piglio tagliente e comico un mondo in cui ad appropriarsi degli esiti del futurismo sono proprio le donne. Angela Norelli mescola fiction e materiali d’archivio con un montaggio che non interrompe mai il flusso narrativo andando, anzi, ad acuire sempre di più l’interesse in chi guarda, raccontando la condizione femminile del passato con echi che risuonano ancora oggi.

In the early years of the twentieth century, in an enigmatic correspondence, Rosa confides to her friend Giorgina that the man-machine of which Marinetti speaks is not a future that concerns men alone, as the Futurists say. It is a present and concrete fact for women, which Giorgina and the others can receive "by mail".
Irony and the reversal of cultural codes and dogmas are the foundation of We Should All Be Futurists, which tells with a sharp and comic attitude a world in which women are the ones who appropriate the results of futurism. Angela Norelli mixes fiction and archival materials with an editing that never interrupts the narrative flow, going on the contrary, to sharpen more and more the interest of the viewer, telling the female condition of the past with echoes that still resonate today.

La peur, petit chasseur

Un bambino aspetta in silenzio nella quiete del giardino di casa sua, nella profonda campagna, in compagnia del suo pastore tedesco. Cerca sua madre, si guarda attorno, controlla in un capanno, finché non la vede uscire di casa. Ma è come se lei non lo vedesse. Qualcosa la riporta presto dentro casa, e il bambino viene lasciato solo coi suoi incubi.
Un radicale e fulminante cortometraggio che il compianto regista Laurent Achard realizza nel 2004 nell’ambito di un progetto denominato Portraits firmato Arte e Films Hatari. Un raggelante pianosequenza in cui l’ambizione di rendere evidente ma invisibile il reale motivo dello sconcerto e della paura diventa una sotterranea traccia di orrore, dispersa opacamente in un paesaggio di quotidianità. Suoni, colori, attese, rendono questi 9 minuti tra i film più agghiaccianti della recente storia del cinema europeo.

A child waits in silence in the quiet of his home garden, in the deep countryside, alongside with his German Shepherd. He looks for his mother, looks around, checks in a shed, until he sees her leaving the house. But it’s as if she doesn’t see him. Something soon brings her back into the house, and the child is left alone with his nightmares.
A radical and shocking short film that the recently passed away director Laurent Achard made in 2004 as part of a project called Portraits, by Arte and Films Hatari. A chilling long take in which the ambition to make the real reason for bewilderment and fear evident but invisible becomes an underground trace of fear, opaquely dispersed in a placid everyday landscape. Sounds, colors, expectations, make these 9 minutes among the most unsettling movies in the recent history of European cinema.

Novanta giorni

Novanta giorni per fare una scelta che cambia la vita. Donne di ogni estrazione sociale si rivolgono all'Ospedale Cervello di Palermo per l’interruzione di gravidanza mentre un centro pro-vita ostracizza questa pratica. L'infermiera Antonietta guida le donne nel loro percorso per abortire tra pillole e assorbenti, mentre le donne del movimento anti aborto, tra corredini e fotografie di neonati, portano avanti la loro battaglia. Due mondi opposti uniti da una corsa contro il tempo.
La regista racconta le storie, le speranze, i desideri, i dubbi e le paure di alcune donne che si trovano ad affrontare una scelta per sé stesse. Districandosi tra le difficoltà che susseguono la loro decisione le donne protagoniste si confrontano con il senso di colpa e con i perché delle loro scelte. Assente e presente al contempo è il corpo delle donne, attraversato da tensioni e incertezze.

Ninety days to make a life-changing choice. Women of all social backgrounds go to the Cervello Hospital in Palermo for a voluntary termination of pregnancy while the pro-life center ostracizes this practice. Nurse Antonietta guides the women on their path into having an abortion with pills and sanitary pads, while the women of the anti-abortion movement carry on their battle by offering layettes and showing photographs of newborn babies. Two opposing worlds united by a race against time.
The director tells stories, hopes, desires, doubts and fears of some women who are facing a life changing choice. Untangling the difficulties that follow their decision, the women protagonists confront guilt and the whys of their choices. The female body is absent and present at the same time, crossed by tensions and uncertainties.
