Bernadette Mayer published more than thirty poems and essays between 1968 and 2021, before dying in 2022. In Utopia, from 1984, she imagines an alternative world, a uchronia without disease, without money, in which the doors are all large and the windows are all open. A woman makes her son read an edited version of the poem, instructing him on pronunciation errors and drawing, with a sudden surreal sketch, what utopia could mean 40 years later.
