Robi Rapp e Ernst Ostertag si incontrano tramite la rivista omosessuale Der Kreis e il suo club gay a Zurigo dagli anni ’40. Sebbene all’epoca l’omosessualità fosse legale in Svizzera, non era ancora del tutto tollerata e, nel diventare il primo luogo di ritrovo omosessuale, Der Kreis diventa anche il baluardo dei diritti e della cultura gay. Quando Ernst, insegnante, si innamora perdutamente di Robi, parrucchiere di giorno e travestito di notte, un’ondata di crimini omofobici si abbatte su Zurigo. Un clima di paura si instaura nella comunità e dà vita a profondi cambiamenti all’interno dell’associazione. Robi ed Ernst non si lasceranno più e arriveranno fino all’ufficializzazione della loro unione negli anni ’90, quando diventeranno la prima coppia omosessuale svizzera legalmente sposata. Il film ha vinto il Teddy Award come miglior documentario al Festival di Berlino 2014.

Robi Rapp and Ernst Ostertag met through the homosexual magazine Der Kreis and its gay club located in Zurich since the 40s. Though at the time homosexuality was legal in Switzerland, it wasn’t totally tolerated yet, and becoming the first gay meeting place, Der Kreis became the symbol of the defence of homosexual rights and culture. When Ernst, a teacher, fell madly in love with Robi, a hairdresser by day and transvestite by night, a wave of homophobic crimes hit Zurich. A climate of fear built up in the community and gave birth to profound changes within the association. Robi and Ernst will never split up and they will obtain the formalization of their union in the 90s, when they became the first legally married Swiss homosexual couple. The film won the Teddy Award for best documentary at Berlin Festival in 2014.

Come una coppia di Don Chisciotte e Sancho Panza dei nostri tempi, Sam e Jonathan, due venditori ambulanti di travestimenti e articoli per feste, ci accompagnano in un caleidoscopico viaggio attraverso il destino umano. Trentanove episodi girati con camera fissa creano questo percorso che svela la bellezza insita in alcuni singoli momenti, la meschinità di altri, l’ironia e la tragedia nascosti dentro di noi, la grandezza della vita, ma anche l’assoluta fragilità dell’umanità. Un piccione seduto su un ramo riflette sull’esistenza è pervaso da un raffinato humour insieme a quel gusto dell’assurdo tipico del cinema scandinavo. Una brillante commedia che conclude la geniale trilogia di Roy Andersson, vincendo il Leone d’oro al settantunesimo festival di Venezia.

Just like Don Quixote and Sancho Panza of our times, Sam and Jonathan, two peddlers who sell costumes and party items, will lead us though a kaleidoscopic journey across human destiny. Thirty-nine static-shot episodes create this route that reveals the beauty lying in some single moments, the pettiness of others, the irony and tragedy hidden inside us, the greatness of life, but also the extreme weakness of human beings. A pigeon sat on a branch reflecting on existence is pervaded by a refined humour together with that taste of the absurd typical of the Scandinavian cinema. An extraordinary comedy that concludes the genial trilogy by Roy Andersson, winning the Golden Lion at the 71th Venice film festival.

Un progetto d’amore ad alto valore sociale e politico: due donne decidono di rendere pubblico il loro giorno più bello, anche se sanno che così facendo si esporranno all’incomprensione di un paese, l’Italia, dove il matrimonio omosessuale non è ancora riconosciuto. Dal loro seguitissimo blog nasce questo film, che racconta le avventure di due promesse spose fino al fatidico sì. E che non è solo la storia tenera e divertente dei preparativi per una cerimonia italo-svedese, è una denuncia contro la grave arretratezza italiana in materia di diritti civili, e un modo di indicare la direzione giusta: la strada fino a quella cerimonia nei boschi, a quella famiglia allargata riunita senza pregiudizi attorno alla realtà dell’amore.

A love project with a high social and political value: two women decide to let the most important day of their life become a public event, but they know that by doing this they will be exposed to misunderstandings in a country, Italy, where gay marriage is not recognized yet. This film was born from their very popular blog and tells us about the adventures of the two betrothed until their fateful “I do”. And it is not just the tender and amusing story about the preparation of the Italian-Swedish celebration, it also exposes the serious Italian underdevelopment concerning civil rights, it is a way to point the right direction: the one that will lead to that ceremony in the woods, to that extended family all gathered around a reality of love, without any prejudice.

Basato su una storia vera, Pride è una commedia sociale ambientata nell’epoca thatcheriana durante lo storico sciopero dei minatori del 1984. Un gruppo di attivisti del movimento gay, spinti dalla solidarietà verso chi, come loro, lotta contro il sistema, decide di raccogliere fondi per gli scioperanti del Galles. I minatori però accolgono con diffidenza l’iniziativa, considerando il sostegno di lesbiche e gay inopportuno e imbarazzante. L’incontro fra i due mondi, difficile per non dire esplosivo, sarà la base per una sorprendente amicizia reciproca. Accolta trionfalmente al Festival di Cannes e salutata da un enorme successo di pubblico nel Regno Unito, una commedia irresistibile che è stata uno dei casi cinematografici del 2014.

Based on a true story, Pride is a social comedy set during the Thatcherism while the historic miner’s strike of 1984 was taking place. A group of gay activists decides to raise money to support some Welsh picketers out of solidarity towards those who struggle, like they do, against the system. But at first the miners mistrust their action, considering gays and lesbians support as inopportune and embarrassing. The encounter between these two worlds, though difficult not to say explosive, will become the base of an astonishing and mutual friendship. Triumphantly welcomed at Cannes Festival, and saluted by a great success of public in the UK, Pride is a compelling comedy, a great hit of 2014.

Tutti conoscono Antoine D’Agata come fotografo, esploratore degli spazi dell’eccesso e dei luoghi del profondo, il suo sguardo paragonabile a quello di un Francis Bacon della fotografia. Non molti invece sanno delle sue esplorazioni oltre i confini della sua arte, di cui Atlas rappresenta il primo esperimento compiuto: un lungometraggio che guarda ai corpi e alle voci incontrate per il mondo provando a superare i limiti dell’immagine fissa. Non è un esperimento facile né allegro: e non è nemmeno esente da critiche. Il posizionamento del fotografo rispetto alle storie che racconta, tuttavia, rende questo film un tentativo di superamento dei compartimenti stagni con il quale vale la pena di confrontarsi. Droga, prostituzione, malattia nelle lingue delle donne che D’Agata ha incontrato o amato. Un ritratto intimo e sconvolgente.

We all know Antoine D’Agata as a photographer, as an explorer of the excess and the depths, his photographic style recalling Francis Bacon. But few people know about his explorations beyond the borders of his own art; Atlas represents his first complete experiment of these explorations: a feature film that looks at the bodies and voices he has met around the world trying to overcome the limits of the still picture. It is not an easy nor a happy experiment: and it isn’t even immune to criticism. In spite of this, the position of the photographer towards the stories he tells make this film an attempt to overcome the hermetically sealed compartments of the artist and the subject, an attempt which is worth considering. Drug, prostitution, illness in the native languages of the women that D’Agata has met or loved. An intimate and upsetting portrait.

 È il compleanno della nonna. Rosa, la padrona di casa, crede di avere tutto sotto controllo, ma vivrà incomprensioni con le sorelle, con il marito che ha un’assurda ossessione per la musica spagnola, e anche con se stessa, per via di un segreto di famiglia. Ironico e con il senso del comico, un corto che gioca con il tema della finzione, del nascondersi e della scarsa comunicazione tra familiari.

 It's grandma's birthday. Rosa, the hostess, thinks to have everything under control, but she will have some misunderstandings with her sisters, with her husband who has an absurd obsession for Spanish music, and also with herself, due to a family secret. And ironic and even comical short that plays with the themes of fiction, hiding and poor communication between relatives.

Carlos spazza e pulisce il pavimento di una bottega di barbiere d’altri tempi. Alla vigilia della festa dell’indipendenza, tra i clienti appare Julio. I loro occhi si incontrano e, quando la bottega chiude, Julio ritorna per Carlos. Passano la notte insieme, mangiando, parlando e ballando, ben sapendo che questo incontro sarà molto breve. Una storia fresca e delicata che racconta l'ingenuità e la spensieratezza dell'adolescenza e la preziosità dei fugaci momenti di gioia che la vita, alle volte, ci regala.

Carlos sweeps and mops the floor of an old-time barbershop. The day before Independence Day, Julio comes into the shop. Their eyes meet, and when the barbershop closes Julio comes back for Carlos. They spend the night together, eating, chatting and even dancing, fully aware that this encounter will be short-lived. A clean and delicate story that tells us about the naivety and the carefreeness of adolescence and the value of the fleeting moments that life sometimes offers us.

 Una mattina, un uomo apre la finestra del proprio appartamento e scorge nel palazzo di fronte una presenza che non aveva mai notato prima. L’avvenimento inaspettato innesca una tormentata serie di riflessioni introspettive. L’uomo è infatti avvezzo al voyerismo, all’attenta osservazione della realtà circostante e dei personaggi che la popolano, ma spinto dal desiderio e dall’attrazione verso il nudo maschile, stavolta potrebbe decidersi ad agire.

 One morning, a man opens the window of his apartment and sees in the opposite building a presence which he had never noticed before. This unattended event triggers a tormented series of introspective reflections. The man is indeed accustomed to voyeurism and to have a sharp look over his surroundings and the characters that inhabit them, but driven by the desire and the attraction towards the male nude, this time he could decide to dive into action.

 Un videoclip che nasce dalla fusione tra le suggestioni di un brano di Loozoo, progetto musicale elettronico di stampo techno-ambient intrapreso a Catania dai fratelli Trimarchi nel 1996, e il testo “Teste Morte” di Samuel Beckett, scrittore tra i più influenti del XX secolo e massimo rappresentante del “Teatro dell’assurdo”. Inquietudine elettronica e testi dal significato oscuro s’intrecciano in un linguaggio visivo decisamente sperimentale.

 A videoclip that was born from the fusion between the suggestions of a song by Lozoo – an electronic musical project in techno-ambient style that was realized in Catania by the Trimarchi brothers in 1996 – and the text "Têtes mortes" by Samuel Beckett, one of the most influential writers of the 20th century and the most important exponent of the Theatre of the Absurd. Electro anxiety and obscure texts are intertwined in a highly experimental visual language.

È Halloween: una macabra coppia di emarginati si incontra a una festa nel cuore della notte. Travestiti da personaggi femminili simbolo del cinema horror cominceranno un grottesco vagabondare notturno che li porterà a letto, a discutere di personaggi e film dell’orrore. Monster Mash è un atto d’amore verso il cinema horror, che rende omaggio e allo stesso tempo si prende gioco degli elementi omofobici del genere attraverso la sovversione, l’appropriazione e la ri-contestualizzazione. 

It's Halloween: a macabre couple of outcasts meets at a party in the middle of the night. Disguised as female cult horror movie characters, they begin a grotesque nocturnal wandering that takes them home, in bed, talking about characters and horror movies. is a love act towards horror cinema, it pays tribute to and at the same time mocks the homophobic elements of this genre through the subversion, the appropriation and the  re-contextualization.

 Il risveglio: uno dei più delicati momenti dopo una notte di sesso. Ancora più delicato se a doverlo vivere sono tre ragazze, una coppia e una sconosciuta. Tramite un unico piano sequenza il regista analizza gli incontri e gli scontri, la gelosia e il gioco ma, soprattutto, il sottile confine tra sesso e amore. Patrick Aubert ci invita a ripensare il concetto di convenzione all’interno delle relazioni sentimentali affermando la necessità di osare, di mettere un po’ di pepe nelle nostre vite.

 The awakening: one of the most delicate moments after a sex night. All the more more delicate if three girls, a couple and a stranger are the ones experiencing it. Through a single long take the director analizes encounters and conflicts, jealousy and games but, above all, the thin line between sex and love. Patrick Aubert invites us to rethink the concept of convention inside sentimental relationships claiming the need to dare, to put some pepper into our lives.

La vita di Jonathan segue un leitmotiv scandito dalla danza e dal sesso. Di giorno può allenarsi in pace e concentrarsi, mentre di sera scatta l’ora delle esibizioni nei night club. In questa esistenza di contraddizioni, trasgressioni, incontri, desiderio, ma anche di tanta tecnica e virtuosismo, riesce a darsi molte risposte a non poche domande. Risposte che talvolta sono dolorose, eppure sicuramente vere. 

 Jonathan's life is marked by the leitmotif of dance and sex. By day he can train peacefully and he can concentrate, whereas by night he performs in nightclubs. In this life full of contradictions, transgressions, encounters, desire, but also of technique and virtuosity, he finds many answers to not few questions. Answers that are sometimes painful, but they sure are real.

Mondial 2010 porta lo spettatore nel Medio Oriente, dove la definizione dei confini è fonte di conflitti drammatici. Una coppia gay libanese si mette in viaggio per Ramallah, decidendo di registrare la videocronaca della propria esperienza in Palestina. La tormentata relazione affettiva dei protagonisti e il suo svolgimento sono la prospettiva quotidiana dalla quale viene mostrata la straordinarietà del conflitto tra oppressori e vittime.

 

Mondial 2010 takes the audience to the Middle East, where the definition of the borders is source of terrible conflicts. A Lebanese gay couple starts a trip to Ramallah and they decide to film a report of their experience in Palestine. The protagonists' tormented emotional relation and its development are the daily perspective from which the extraordinary conflict between oppressors and victims is shown.

 Felix è un giovane studente, un ragazzo apparentemente molto comune che da sei mesi lavora come escort per guadagnare dei soldi per pagarsi gli studi. Più volte la settimana gli capita di incontrare uomini più anziani per fare sesso con loro. Questa volta però accade qualcosa di diverso dal solito: un uomo di 250 chili lo aspetta nella sua stanza d’albergo. Invece di fare sesso l’uomo racconta a Felix la sua storia affascinante. 

Felix is a young student, a seemingly ordinary guy that has been working as an escort for six months to earn the money he needs to pay his studies. More than once a week he meets elderly men and has sex with them. However this time something different happens: a 250-kilo man is waiting for him in his hotel room. Instead of having sex with him, he tells Felix his fascinating story.

 Nel mondo degli hooligans regna il frastuono dei megafoni della polizia, dei ringhi dei cani antidroga, degli elicotteri che vigilano nel cielo incendiato. Il protagonista di questo film animato sa di essere prima di tutto un vero hooligan, e sceglie il silenzio circa la sua omosessualità. Ma sempre più spesso, tornando a casa dopo le guerriglie contro i tifosi avversari, ci sono serate in cui i sentimenti taciuti urlano.

 The hooligans world is ruled by the din of the police's megaphones, by the snarls of sniffer dogs, by the helicopters that watch over the sky on fire. The main character of this animated film knows he is first of all a true hooligan, and chooses to silence his homosexuality. But more and more frequently, going back home after the guerrillas against the rival fans, there are nights when his hidden feelings yell out.

Due compagni di scuola si ritrovano a casa dopo le lezioni per trascorrere del tempo insieme, chiacchierando e guardando video su internet. Entrambi si piacciono ma le loro paure, le loro insicurezze si manifestano ed impediscono quel contatto, quel passo decisivo che permetterebbe loro di rivelare quei sentimenti così dolorosamente soffocati. Quanto coraggio ci vuole per affrontare quel salto nel buio? Il regista ci racconta tutti i dubbi e le incertezze dell'adolescenza in un corto che riesce a mettere perfettamente in scena l'ansia del primo approccio, affidandone il compito alle nuove generazioni.

Two schoolmates meet at home after classes to spend some time together, chatting and watching videos on the internet. They  like each other but their fears, their insecurities arise and prevent that contact, that decisive step that would allow them to reveal such repressed feelings. How much courage does it take to face that leap into the unknown? The director tells us about teenagers’ doubts and uncertainties in a short that succeeds in showing first approach anxiety, entrusting the new generations.

Karim è un giovane musicista neodiplomato di origine marocchina. Ad Amsterdam vive una relazione con il suo compagno olandese, ma un sms sembra troncare di netto la loro storia: il compagno non vuole più vivere il loro rapporto in segreto, bensì apertamente. Per Karim si schiude una scelta difficile, legata alle spiegazioni che dovrebbe al padre, il quale non si è risposato non soltanto per non essersi mai innamorato di un’altra donna, ma anche per proteggere suo figlio, non reputando nessuna all’altezza di essere la seconda madre di Karim.

 Karim is a young recently graduated musician of Moroccan origins. In Amsterdam he lives a love relationship with his Dutch classmate, but it looks like a text message is going to break off their story: his partner doesn’t want to live anymore their relationship in secret, but rather openly. Karim has to face a difficult choice, because of the explanations he should give his father who didn’t remarry not only because he never fell in love with another woman, but also to protect his son, for no other woman seemed worth of becoming Karim’s stepmother.

Dancers è una denuncia circa l’attuale situazione del Portogallo e la mancanza di finanziamenti per sostenere le discipline artistiche, che in questo film sono al servizio di un’esplorazione esibizionistica del nudo maschile. Miglior cortometraggio portoghese all’InShadow Dance Film Festival.

 Thirty-five Portuguese dancers undress in front of the camera, becoming the object of desire through a sensual provocative performance. is a declaration about Portugal actual situation and its lack of funds to finance the arts, which are put to use in the exploration of male nudity exhibitionism. Joanna si sente perennemente una ruota di scorta, e si fionda nell’ennesimo rapporto a tre, all’interno della coppia della sua carismatica compagna di stanza, Isabel. Il trio non ha vita facile: la forte personalità di ognuna delle ragazze cerca di imporsi sulle altre, innescando meccanismi di gelosia e possesso. Cortometraggio sorretto da un umorismo cupo e dall’utilizzo surreale del canto e del ballo.

 Joanna always feels like a third wheel and dashes into another threesome, into the couple of her charismatic roommate, Isabel. The trio doesn't have it easy: the strong personality of each girl tries to impose on the others, triggering feelings of jealousy and possession. A short driven by a gloomy humour and the surreal use of dancing and singing.

Paul ha 16 anni e guadagna qualche soldo lavorando per la strada. Gli incontri passeggeri costituiscono la sua routine giornaliera, sino a quando viene a contatto con un gruppo di teenager che gli insegnano che nessuno può fuggire dai propri problemi. Ma Paul ha fatto un patto. Un patto con delle formiche. Un “Ameisenpakt”, che mette in discussione i rigidi schemi della nostra realtà. I confini tra realtà e immaginazione vengono scossi e Paul crea per sé un mondo nel quale potersi sentire a casa.

 Paul is 16 years old and earns his pocket money working the streets. Fleeting encounters shape his daily routine, until he comes across a group of teenagers that teaches him that nobody can run away from their problems. But Paul has made a pact. A pact with some ants. An “Ameisenpakt”, that questions the strict patterns of our reality. The boundaries between reality and imagination are shaking and Paul creates a world for himself that feels like home.
