Simone e Martine lavorano come maschere in un cinema porno a Montparnasse. Passano le loro giornate nel limbo della hall, tra qualche chiacchiera e risata, incontrando gli habitué e le persone solo di passaggio per traghettarle in sala, al loro posto. A mezzanotte Simone si mette in marcia nella notte parigina alla volta di un club lesbico… Ispirato alla biografia di Marie-Claude Treilhou, che in gioventù ha lavorato in un cinema porno per mantenersi al fianco dell’esplosiva Ingrid Bourgoin (che troviamo nel film nei panni di Simone Barbès), è l’opera più conosciuta della regista francese. Un viaggio in tre atti articolato tra interno esterno, buio e luci artificiali, in cui il bizzarro cinema e la città che lo circonda dialogano continuamente e sembrano persino invertirsi. In questa Parigi notturna sospesa tra il cinema di Eustache e l’estetica camp anni Ottanta che ha ispirato tanto cinema francese a venire, Simone e Martine sopravvivono grazie a uno humour senza limiti e a un’eccezionale vitalità.

Simone and Martine are usherettes in a porno cinema in Montparnasse. Installed in the limbic hall, they greet regulars and people passing through, put people in their place, and pass the time chatting. Inspired by the biography of Marie-Claude Treilhou, who in her youth worked to support herself in a porn cinema alongside the explosive Ingrid Bourgoin, who we find in the film as Simone Barbès, this is the best-known work of the French director. A journey in three acts between the interior and exterior, darkness and artificial lights, in which the bizarre cinema and the city that surrounds it constantly dialogue and even seem to invert each other. In this nocturnal Paris, suspended between Eustache's cinema and the 1980s camp aesthetic that inspired so much of French cinema to come, Simone and Martine survive thanks to their boundless humour and exceptional vitality.
