Tony Mounset, giovane e ricco signorotto inglese, decide di assumere Hugo Barnett come suo maggiordomo per la sua nuova casa londinese. Susan, la fidanzata di Tony, non sembra molto contenta del nuovo cameriere e tuttofare nonostante la sua affabilità e professionalità. L’arrivo di Vera, sorella di Hugo, creerà ulteriori motivi di diffidenza. Nel frattempo il rapporto servo-padrone tra Tony e Hugo sembra cominciare a rovesciarsi.

Also due to Dirk Bogarde’s sensational performance, a homosexual subtext, which did not fail to raise a scandal when the film came out, emerges from the relationship between the two men.
