Nelle spire ipnotiche di una serata dentro un locale di una Mitteleuropa sospesa nel tempo e nello spazio, il conte Isidor vede la cantante Viola detta “La Paloma” e se ne innamora perdutamente. Lei è malata di tisi ma è anche pronta ad essere amata, mettendo alla prova le poche speranze che le lascia la malattia.
Non saranno le buone notizie però a concedere felicità eterna alla coppia, nel fiammeggiante e audace melodramma di Daniel Schmid, il film che lo rivelò al mondo dei festival europei come autore colto e imprendibile. Il film così si addentra nella controversa psicologia dei suoi protagonisti, oscillando fra amore e odio, fra affetto e ossessione, fino a sfiorare l’epica e il soprannaturale, al di là della vita e della morte. Schmid è un Fassbinder svizzero in cui l’incomunicabilità approda, paradossalmente, a orizzonti espressivi imprevedibili.

In the hypnotic spirals of an evening in a club, in Central Europe as in a place suspended in time and space, Count Isidor sees the singer Viola known as “La Paloma” and falls madly in love with her. She is sick with tuberculosis but is also ready to be loved, putting to the test the little hope that the illness leaves her with.
Nevertheless, it will not be good news that will grant eternal happiness to the couple, in Daniel Schmid’s flamboyant and audacious melodrama, the film that revealed him to the world of European festivals as a cultured and elusive author. The film thus delves into the controversial psychology of its protagonists, oscillating between love and hate, between affection and obsession, until it borders on the epic and the supernatural, beyond life and death. Schmid is a Swiss Fassbinder in which incommunicability leads, paradoxically, to unpredictable expressive horizons.
