Kurt Waldheim è stato un uomo potente: già segretario delle Nazioni Unite, nel 1986 decide di candidarsi alla presidenza dell’Austria. Cominciano però a circolare voci e studi che mettono in discussione il suo passato, denunciando le sue stesse omissioni sui rapporti avuti con il nazismo durante la Seconda guerra mondiale. Documentando e insieme partecipando alle proteste di una parte del Paese contro Waldheim, Beckermann torna trent’anni dopo su quegli eventi con un film di montaggio, ricostruendone le vicende per dare voce a una società che comincia a interrogarsi seriamente sul suo passato mettendo in questione il rapporto tra verità e menzogna, consapevolezza collettiva e responsabilità personale. Il film è stato candidato agli Oscar per l’Austria nel 2019.

Kurt Waldheim was a powerful man: a former Secretary-General of the United Nations, in 1986 he decided to run for the presidency of Austria. However, rumors and researches questioning his past started spreading, highlighting his own omissions on the relationships he had with Nazism during the Second World War. By documenting and at the same time participating in the protests against Waldheim lodged by a part of the country, Beckermann returns to those events thirty years later with a montage film, reconstructing the events in order to give voice to a society that seriously begins to question its past by observing the relationship between truth and falsehood, collective awareness and personal responsibility. The film was submitted for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film in 2019.
