Voin è cresciuto nella Bulgaria comunista. Dopo vent'anni trascorsi nell’Europa occidentale torna a Sofia, nei luoghi dove ha trascorso la sua infanzia e la sua adolescenza. Un ritratto ramingo che asseconda il suo peregrinare da un luogo all’altro della città, mentre ricordi e aneddoti sono lasciati emergere spontaneamente. Anche i diversi formati utilizzati restituiscono la stratificazione del ricordo, impossibile da ingabbiare nel recinto dell’ordine (crono)logico.

Gaëlle Boucand ricostruisce dunque l’epos frammentato del ritorno di un ragazzo cresciuto tra Est e Ovest, diviso tra due mondi, dalla Berlino underground alla Bulgaria post-sovietica; un racconto di formazione dove città e memoria si fondono: sui monumenti è impressa l’impronta del passato, anche recente, e i fantasmi dell’URSS li abitano, come del resto li abitano le memorie private dei cittadini.

Così in questa città-interiore si aggira Voin che, tramite lo strumento del racconto, rilegge con grande vitalità il suo passato, conquistandosi un posto nella micro e nella macro-storia.

Voin grew up in communist Bulgaria. After 20 years in Western Europe, he returns to those places in Sofia where he spent his childhood and adolescent years. His portrait’s composition moves from place to place, and from memories to anecdotes let them emerge spontaneously. The different formats used in the film also convey the stratification of memory, impossible to cage in the enclosure of (chrono)logical order.

Gaëlle Boucand reconstructs the fragmented epos of the return of a boy who grew up between East and West, torn between two worlds, from underground Berlin to post-Soviet Bulgaria; a coming-of-age story where city and memory merge: the imprint of the past, even the most recent past, is impressed on the monuments, and the ghosts of the USSR inhabit them, as the private memories of every citizen.

And so Voin wanders through this inner-city, reinterpreting his past with great vitality through the medium of storytelling, gaining a place in small and big History.
