An Unusual Summer

A seguito di un atto di vandalismo, il padre del regista decide di installare una videocamera di sorveglianza per registrare le scene che si svolgono davanti all’abitazione: la vita familiare di tutti i giorni, i vicini che vanno a lavorare, i bambini a scuola. An Unusual Summer cattura fugaci momenti di poesia mentre, sullo sfondo, la coreografia quotidiana di Ramla, parte oggi d’Israele, affiora in superficie.

Following an act of vandalism, the director's father decides to install a security camera to record the scenes that take place in front of the house: everyday family life, neighbors going to work, children at school. An Unusual Summer captures fleeting moments of poetry as, in the background, the daily choreography of Ramla, nowadays part of Israel, comes to the surface.

Recollection

Un sogno che si alimenta con le immagini di film israeliani e statunitensi girati tra gli anni Sessanta e Novanta. Dal campo sono estromessi tutti i protagonisti di quelle pellicole. Questo allora è il sogno di una città deserta, Jaffa, e delle rovine che si sono accatastate anno dopo anno. Lo sfondo, assurto al ruolo di protagonista, non è solo un paesaggio spettrale, ma diventa anche un punto di partenza dal quale ricominciare a cercare forme di vita.

A dream that feeds on the images of Israeli and American films shot between the sixties and the nineties. All the protagonists of those films are excluded from the field. This then is the dream of a deserted city, Jaffa, and of the ruins that have piled up year after year. The background, which has risen to the role of protagonist, is not only a ghostly landscape, but also becomes a starting point from which to begin looking for life forms.

The Roof

Un film poetico che descrive il viaggio di ritorno di un uomo che ritrova la sua famiglia e il suo paese di origine. Nonostante l’annoso e distintivo sfondo politico, il messaggio è universale, grazie al modo in cui il regista esamina il contesto sociale della sua storia, attraverso la rappresentazione lirica della capacità umana di immaginare e creare mondi che passino attraverso il tempo e lo spazio. Durante il film si scopre che la casa non è solo un luogo, ma pure un sentimento. Anche se viene distrutta dalle bombe, gli abitanti la porteranno con loro ovunque andranno, incapaci di lasciare alle spalle qualcosa che è parte integrante del proprio concetto di sé.

A poetic film that describes the journey of a man who is about to return to his family and his country of origin. Despite the long-standing and distinctive political background, the message is universal, thanks to the way in which the director examines the social context of his story, through the lyrical representation of the human capacity to imagine and create worlds that pass through time and space. During the film it turns out that home is not just a place, but a feeling as well. Even if it is destroyed by bombs, the inhabitants will take it with them wherever they go, unable to leave behind something that is an integral part of their self-concept.

Port of Memory

In quel che resta della città di Jaffa, un uomo che sta per perdere la sua casa contempla il suo destino. Nel frattempo due donne rimangono legate alle loro case. Una di loro trova conforto nel prendersi cura dell’anziana madre, finché la sua casa non viene rilevata da una troupe cinematografica israeliana. L'altra si perde in sogni d'amore mentre realizza addobbi nuziali. In un bar vicino un vecchio capitano siede immobile tutto il giorno, mentre un altro uomo si muove irrequieto come un pesce in un acquario. Per questi personaggi palestinesi si tratta di uno stile di vita: aggrapparsi alla speranza attraverso i propri rituali.

In what is left of the city of Jaffa, a man about to lose his house contemplates his fate. Meanwhile two women remain tied to their homes. One finds solace taking care of her old mother, until her house is taken over by an Israeli film crew. The other immerses herself in dreams of love whilst making wedding decorations. In a nearby café, an old captain sits motionless the whole day through, while another man moves restless like a fish in an aquarium. For these Palestinian characters, this is a way of life: that of holding onto hope through their own rituals.
