LE CONCOURS

La Fémis di Parigi è una delle più prestigiose scuole di cinema del mondo. Ogni anno, orde di giovani e meno giovani si riuniscono nel giorno delle selezioni per tentare la sorte, provando così ad accedere a quello che, per molti, risulta essere un efficacissimo trampolino di lancio, un ponte verso un altrimenti irraggiungibile sogno. Ma chi è che decide chi saranno I futuri registi di domani? Chi prenderà il posto di Techine, Annaud e Desplechin? Quali sono I criteri adottati dai professori ogni anno per selezionare gli studenti? Attraverso l’occhio attento e neutrale della sua telecamera, Claire Simon ci racconta l’ordalia di un gruppo di ragazzi e dei professori che li giudicheranno, smascherando il cinismo, le contraddizioni e le difficoltà che si celano dietro il lunghissimo processo di selezione della più antica scuola di cinema francese.

La Fémis of Paris is one of the most prestigious film schools around the world. Every year, a moltitude of young and less young gather on selection’s day to roll the dice, trying to access to that, for many, result to be an effective stepping stone, a bridge towards an otherwise unreacheble deam. But who’s that decide who will be the future directors of tomorrow? Who will take Techine, Annaud and Desplechin places? What are the parameters adopted by the teacher each year to judge the students? Through the attentive and neutral eye of his camera, Claire Simon tells us the ordeal of a group of students and the teaches that will judge them, unveiling the cynicism, the contraddictions and the complexities concealed behind the very long selection process of the oldest french film school.

GÉOGRAPHIE HUMAINE

La Gare du Nord di Parigi è un luogo di incontro e di scontro tra personalità ed individui differenti. C’è chi parte e c’è chi arriva ma, in questo strano vortice capace di racchiudere I meccanismi di tutto l’universo, ben pochi si fermano. Sotto gli occhi di Claire Simon e del suo amico di vecchia data e collega Simon Mérabet, la stazione centrale di Parigi si rivela essere una splendida scenografia che custodisce le più belle e curiose storie che potreste mai sentire: storie di tutti I giorni, storie che nel caos e nella frenesia quotidiana, finiscono per rimanere troppo spesso inascoltate, storie che si perdono confuse tra I rumori della stazione. Nato durante le riprese del lungometraggio di finzione Gare du Nord, presentato al Festival del film di Locarno, Geographie Humanie è il perfetto esempio di quanto sia labile il confine tra la realtà e la finzione, di come ogni storia meriti di essere raccontata.

]Paris Gare du Nord is a gathering and clash place between different characters and personalities. There’s who leaves and there’s who arrives but, in this strange turmoil capable of contain the mechanisms of the whole univeres, quite a few stop. Under the eyes of Claire Simon and his old friend and collegue Simon Mérabet, Paris central station unveils as a splendid scenography that safeguards the most beautiful and curious stories that you could ever hear: everyday stories, stories that, inside everyday chaos and frenesy, end too many times untold, stories that are lost within the station sounds. Born during while shooting the fiction movie Gare du Nord, presented at Locarno Festival, Geographie Humaine is the perfect example of how is thin the limit between fiction and reality, of how every story deserves to be told.

COÛTE QUE COÛTE

Nizza, zona industriale di Saint-Laurent de Var. Con i soldi del suocero, Jihad ha aperto una piccola impresa alimentare. Le cose, nonostante la passione dei dipendenti e la bontà dei prodotti, non vanno bene. Jihad, però, non si dà per vinto: insieme ai cuochi e la segretaria va avanti. «Costi quello che costi». Tornata nel suo Midi, Claire Simon dispone le pedine di una commedia umana, che ben presto hanno la meglio sul soggetto. Un film su un’utopia non diversa da quella che sta dietro ogni progetto della regista.

Nice, the industrial area of Saint-Laurent del Var. With money from his in-laws, Jihad opens a small eatery. Despite the commitment of his employees and the abundance of good products, things aren’t going well. But Jihad does not give up; together with the cooks and his secretary, he forges ahead, “cost what it costs.” Back in Midi, Claire Simon shows the pieces of a human comedy that soon get the best of the film’s subject. A film about a utopia similar to the one behind all of the director’s projects.
