Patricia Highsmith wrote over 22 novels, many were adapted to the big screen: best known are Strangers on a Train, adapted by Alfred Hitchock, The Talented Mr. Ripley directed by René Clément, Wim Wenders and Anthony Minghella, and Carol, a partly autobiographic novel on a lesbian love story, by Todd Haynes. Highsmith occupies an uneasy space in the queer literary canon for her tendency to mix homoeroticism with homicide in her novels and for the way that some of her most famous character deals with the issue of getting rid of any feeling of guilt. Based on Patricia Highsmith’s diaries, the film casts new light on the famous thriller writer’s life and oeuvre, permeated by themes of love and focused on her quest for identity and her troubled love life.
