Originaria dello Sri Lanka, figlia del leader del movimento indipendentista Tamil, trasferitasi a Londra all’età di 9 anni con la famiglia a causa della guerra civile, Matangi “Maya” Arulpragasam in arte M.I.A. ha da sempre fatto i conti con il sospetto e l’intolleranza della gente. Con la musica nel sangue fin da piccola, la giovane Maya decide di raccontare il mondo attraverso una cinepresa diventando una documentarista. Tornata quindi in patria per un progetto sulle proprie origini, trova però la musica. Attraverso inedito materiale d’archivio, in parte girato dalla stessa M.I.A., il documentario ricostruisce la vita e l’ascesa della “bad girl” della musica pop, tra successo, censura e attivismo politico.

Born in Sri Lanka, daughter of the founder of the Tamil independence movement, moved to London from the civil war with her family at 9 years old, Matangi “Maya” Arulpragasam AKA M.I.A. always reckoned with people’s suspect and intolerance. Music in her bones since her childhood, the young Maya decides to illustrate the world with a camera becoming a documentarist. Back in her native land for a project about her origin, she finds instead the music. Using original archive material, partially shot by M.I.A. herself, the documentary retrace the life and the ascent of the “bad girl” of pop music, between success, censorship and political activism.
