Una manciata di burattini, un attore, un set scarno. Questo film potrebbe essere descritto con la massima less is more, meno è meglio. Puntando sull’essenzialità stilistica – verbale e scenografica soprattutto –, Jerk riesce a ricostruire con mezzi quasi rudimentali la totale efferatezza dei delitti compiuti da Dean Corll, adolescente texano che, aiutato da due suoi conoscenti, negli anni Settanta uccise e violentò più di venti persone. Il lavoro di Gisèle Vienne si basa su un testo di Dennis Cooper, scritto dalla prospettiva del protagonista, ormai ergastolano. Il risultato finale è una narrazione multimediale, a cavallo tra teatro, cinema e fanzine. Rinunciando al climax narrativo proprio dei film horror e splatter, e a una graduale discesa agli inferi, Dean porta il pubblico in medias res, costringendolo già dai primi secondi a fare i conti con la cruda realtà dei fatti.

A handful of puppets, one actor, a bare set. This film could be described with the maxim “less is more”. Relying on stylistic essentiality – especially verbal and scenographic –, Jerk manages to depict with almost rudimentary tools the total brutality of the crimes committed by Dean Corll, a Texan teenager who, helped by two acquaintances, killed and raped more than twenty people in the 1970s. Gisèle Vienne’s work is based on a text by Dennis Cooper, written from the perspective of the protagonist, now a lifer. The end result is a multimedia storytelling across theatre, cinema and fanzine. Renouncing to both the narrative climax of horror and splatter movies and a gradual descent into hell, Dean takes the audience in medias res, forcing them to come to terms with the harsh reality of the facts.
