Nato a New York nel 1942, è un regista e scrittore indipendente. Ha frequentato il Brooklyn College, dove si è laureato nel 1964. Ha lavorato come montatore prima di dedicarsi al suo primo lungometraggio, il film sperimentale Casual Relations (1974). Negli anni Novanta ha iniziato a lavorare in maniera intensiva con il materiale d’archivio, realizzando film come Rock Hudson’s Home Movies (1992), Exterior Night (1993), From the Journals of Jean Seberg (1995) e The Silver Screen: Color Me Lavender (1997). Il suo interesse per il romanzo vittoriano, il melodramma e la storia dell’arte è ravvisabile in alcuni dei suoi cortometraggi, tra cui Becoming Anita Ekberg (2014), The Vanity Tables of Douglas Sirk (2014) e Debra Paget, For Example (2016), Sergei/Sir Gay (2016). Dal 2005 vive e lavora a Parigi. Molti dei suoi articoli sono stati pubblicati sulle riviste di cinema francesi Trafic, fondata da Serge Daney, e Cinéma. Born in New York in 1942, he is an independent filmmaker and writer. He attended Brooklyn College and graduated in 1964. He worked as an editor before making his first feature, the experimental film Casual Relations (1974). Throughout the 90s he started working intensively with found footage, making films such as Rock Hudson's Home Movies (1992), Exterior Night (1993), From the Journals of Jean Seberg (1995) and The Silver Screen: Color Me Lavender (1997). His interest in the Victorian novel, melodrama and art history can be seen in some of his short films, including Becoming Anita Ekberg (2014), The Vanity Tables of Douglas Sirk (2014) and Debra Paget, For Example (2016), Sergei/Sir Gay (2016). Since 2005 he lives and works in Paris. Many of his articles have been published in the French film magazines Trafic, founded by Serge Daney, and Cinéma. He has also published collections of his fictional and non-fictional essays in both French – Le spectateur qui en savait trop, 2008 – and English – (F)au(x)tobiographies (2013), The Secret Life of Moving Shadows (2014). He was the protagonist of the Presenze section of the 12^th Sicilia Queer filmfest.
