Attingendo a foto, filmati d'archivio e ricordi personali, il film ricostruisce la vita di Susanna Valenti, la donna che gestiva Casa Susanna, un luogo sicuro ai piedi delle Catskills, New York, dove una rete clandestina di donne transgender e di travestiti ha trovato rifugio negli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta. Per Diane e Kate, oggi ottantenni, quella casa ormai abbandonata ha rappresentato uno spazio di libertà dove poter esplorare le proprie scelte identitarie. Insieme a loro, Gregory, il figlio di Susanna, e Betsy, figlia di Donald, autore di A Year Among the Girls sulla sua esperienza di travestito a Casa Susanna, sostengono l’idea che la solidarietà e l’impeto ribelle di questo gruppo di donne vestite come le signore della classe media americana possano coesistere con il progetto di famiglia “tradizionale” che parte della sua comunità ha intrapreso.

Using a rich trove of photos, archival footage and personal remembrances, the film reconstructs the forgotten life of Susanna Valenti, the woman who ran Casa Susanna, a safe place in the Catskills, New York, where an underground network of transgender women and cross-dressing men found refuge in the 1950s and 60s. For Diane and Kate, now in their eighties, that abandoned house represented a space of freedom where they could explore their identity choices. Along with them, Gregory, the son of Susanna, and Betsy, daughter of Donald author of A Year Among the Girls about his experience as a transvestite at Casa Susanna, support the idea that solidarity and rebellion of this group of women dressed like middle class American women can coexist with the "traditional" family project that part of its community have undertaken.

Nato nel 1968, è un regista e sceneggiatore francese. Dal 1987 al 1992 ha frequentato l’École du Louvre e si è laureato in storia dell’arte alla Sorbona. È docente alla La Fémis. Nel 1998 dopo aver realizzato il cortometraggio Les corps ouverts ha vinto il premio Jean Vigo come miglior regista. Tra i suoi film più noti Presque rien (2000), Wild Side (2004), Plein Sud (2009). Dopo Les invisibles (2012), selezionato al Festival di Cannes e premio César come miglior documentario, e Les vies de Thérèse (2017), presentato alla Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, ha diretto tre nuovi documentari: Adolescentes (2019), premiato al Festival di Locarno, Petite fille (2020), proiettato al Festival di Berlino e Casa Susanna (2022), selezionato alle Giornate degli Autori a Venezia e al Festival di Toronto.

Born in 1968, he is a French director and screenplayer. From 1987 to 1992 he studied at the École du Louvre, and has a BA from the Sorbonne in history of art. He teaches at La Fémis. In 1998 after had completed the short Les corps ouverts he won Jean Vigo prize as best director. Presque rien (2000), Wild Side (2004) and Plein Sud (2009) are among his renowned films. After Les invisibles (2012), selected at Cannes Film Festival and César award for best documentary and Les vies de Thérèse (2017) presented at the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, he directed three new documentaries: Adolescentes (2019), awarded at the Locarno Film Festival, Petite fille (2020), screened at the Berlin Film Festival, and Casa Susanna (2022) selected for the Giornate degli Autori in Venice and at TIFF.
