Basato su ricerca storiografica approfondita, il film è narrato da un autore immaginario ed enigmatico la cui difficile posizione di spia e omosessuale nella metà del XX secolo è offuscata dall’irragionevolezza del desiderio e dalle ragioni di segretezza dettate dalla sua posizione. Il film utilizza una modalità narrativa fluida e inafferrabile, in cui il protagonista dirige le scene del film dall'esterno come se osservasse la realtà da un binocolo, spostandosi da St. James's Park – una nota area di cruising frequentata dall’establishment britannico – a Beaulieu, una casa di campagna nell'Hampshire che fungeva da scuola di formazione per responsabili delle operazioni speciali.
Ungentle è un ritratto dell'esperienza condivisa di sotterfugio e segretezza e una riflessione sulle tensioni tra lealtà e lussuria, sé autentici e credenze adottate, status e desiderio.

Based on extensive historical research, the film is narrated by an imagined, enigmatic auteur whose fraught position as both a spy and gay man in the mid–20th century is troubled by the unreasonableness of desire and the reasons for secrecy prescribed by his position. The film edges at a fluidity and an atmosphere of unknowability, where the protagonist directs the scenes of the film from outside of the camera lens. It moves from St. James’s Park, a historical cruising ground at the center of British power, to Beaulieu, a historic country house in Hampshire that served as a Special Operations Executive training school.
Ungentle is a portrait of the shared experience of subterfuge and secrecy between homosexuals and spies as well as a reflection on the tensions between loyalty and lust, authentic selves and adopted beliefs, status and desire.

I suoi video sono stati proiettati in istituzioni e festival, tra cui KW Institute for Contemporary Art di Berlino, London Film Festival, Rotterdam International Film Festival, Smithsonian African American Film Festival, Edinburgh Artist Moving Image. È stata protagonista di importanti eventi, tra cui il Dhaka Art Summit (2020) e la Biennale di Berlino (2018). Her video works have been screened at institutions and festivals including KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin, London Film Festival, Rotterdam International Film Festival, Smithsonian African American Film Festival, Edinburgh Artist Moving Image. She has been featured in major international presentations including the Dhaka Art Summit (2020) and Berlin Biennale (2018). She was awarded the 2020 Arts Foundation Futures Award for Experimental Short Film and the 2019 Berwick New Cinema Award.

È un artista e scrittore. Ha pubblicato i romanzi Unknown Language (2020), Red Tory: My Corbyn Chemsex Hell (2019) e Chubz: The Demonization of My Working Arse (2015). Con Ben Miller, conduce il podcast di grande successo Bad Gays. Il loro libro, Bad Gays: A Homosexual History, è stato pubblicato da Verso Books. Scrive di cultura digitale, sessualità e politica per Architectural Review, Icon, Art Monthly, L'Uomo Vogue e The Guardian. Lo spunto per questo lavoro cinematografico risale a un walking tour da lui condotto, commissionato dallo Studio Voltaire come parte del progetto Rainbow Aphorisms.

He is an artist and writer. He has published the novels Unknown Language (2020) Red Tory: My Corbyn Chemsex Hell (2019) and Chubz: The Demonization of My Working Arse (2015). With Ben Miller, he hosts the highly successful podcast Bad Gays. Their book, Bad Gays: A Homosexual History, was recently published by Verso Books. He writes on digital culture, sexuality and politics for Architectural Review, Icon, Art Monthly, L’Uomo Vogue and The Guardian. This new film work has developed directly from a walking tour by Lemmey, commissioned by Studio Voltaire in 2018 as part of the offsite project Rainbow Aphorisms.
