Youcef sogna qualcosa di diverso dal mestiere che sta per iniziare e dalla sua relazione di coppia ed è attratto dalla vita avventurosa di una troupe di drag queen in tournée nel suo villaggio. Un ragazzo percorre strade deserte sui tacchi a spillo in attesa dei risultati di ammissione ad un corso che lo porterà lontano da lì. Jonas posa per Mathieu, fotografo gay specializzato nel ritrarre giovani ragazzi in costume.
Borghi isolati, pomeriggi sospesi, voglia di avventura, ragazzi che amano i ragazzi. Il cinema di Gaël Lépingle prende le distanze dai modelli trendy della comunità LGBT+, immergendosi nei territori anonimi che compongono il mosaico della provincia francese.

Youcef dreams about something different from the job he's about to start and his couple relationship and he feels attracted to the adventurous life of a drag troupe in tour in his village. A boy walks along desert streets on stiletto heels waiting for the results of the admission to a course that will take him away from there. Jonas poses for Mathieu, a gay photographer specialized in portraying young boys in costume.
Isolated villages, suspended afternoons, desire for adventure, boys who love boys. Gaël Lépingle moves away from the trendy models of the LGBT+ community and dig deep down into the anonymous territories that make up the mosaic of the French province.

Ha esordito come regista di documentari, proiettati in festival internazionali (Rotterdam, Viennale, Cinéma du Réel, Jeonju). Nel 2015 dirige un mediometraggio interamente cantato, Une jolie vallée. Julien (2010) e Seuls les pirates (2018), presentato al Sicilia Queer filmfest nel 2019, hanno vinto il premio per miglior film al FID di Marsiglia. Dopo Nuclear Summer (2020), Des garçons de province è il suo quarto lungometraggio.

He has directed documentary films, shown in international festivals (Rotterdam, Viennale, Cinéma du Réel, Jeonju). In 2015, he directed a medium-length musical, Une jolie vallée. Julien (2010) and Seuls les pirates (2018), screened at the Sicilia Queer filmfest in 2019, received the French competition grand prize at FID Marseille. After Nuclear Summer (2020), Des garçons de province is his fourth feature film.
