Drifa Mezenner filma il peso dell'assenza del fratello Sofiane che nel 1992 ha lasciato illegalmente l'Algeria per l'Inghilterra. Racconta l’Algeria, un presente stagnante e un passato rimosso a ogni costo, nell’illusione di potere così andare avanti, esponendosi invece al rischio di commettere di nuovo gli stessi errori. E racconta altresì l'assenza, le due forme differenti di esilio: quello esteriorizzato del fratello che da trent’anni è lontano, e quello interiore di chi è rimasto ad aspettare, a osservare i più giovani perdere la fiducia e fuggire. Due forme di esilio che parlano di un paese mancante e che potrà tornare pienamente a esistere soltanto quando gli algerini non saranno più costretti ad abbandonarlo.

Drifa Mezenner films the weight of the absence of his brother Sofiane, who illegally left Algeria for England in 1992. He recounts Algeria, a stagnant present and a past that is forcefully removed, under the illusion of thus being able to move forward, instead exposing to the risk of making the same mistakes again. And it also recounts absence, the two different forms of exile: the externalized one of the brother who has been away for thirty years, and the inner one of those left waiting, watching the younger ones lose faith and flee. Two forms of exile that speak of a missing country which can come into a fuller existence again only when Algerians will no longer be forced to leave.

Vive ad Algeri ed è regista nonché fondatrice e manager della piattaforma Tahya Cinéma. Ha studiato grafica e letteratura inglese. Il suo cortometraggio documentario J'ai habité l'absence deux fois del 2011 è stato selezionato in diversi festival internazionali, aggiudicandosi dei premi. Attualmente sta lavorando al suo primo lungometraggio documentario Drifa et la baleine solitaire.

She lives in Algiers and is a filmmaker as well as founder and manager of the platform Tahya Cinéma. She studied graphic arts and English literature. Her short creative documentary J'ai habité l'absence deux fois has been selected in several international film festivals and won awards. She is now working on her creative documentary Drifa et la baleine solitaire.
