François è appena andato a vivere con la compagna Christine nella Vallée de Joux in Svizzera. Per mantenersi trova lavoro presso il piccolo giornale locale: dovrà tenere una rubrica di cinema e scrivere delle proiezioni dell'unico cinema del paese. Ma François non sa niente di cinema, e finirà col copiare di nascosto gli articoli della rivista Travelling per la quale scrivono critici cinematografici affermati. A Losanna, dove assisterà alle proiezioni per la stampa di alcuni film, incontrerà Rosa, critica rinomata. Tra i due s'instaurerà immediatamente una relazione perversa incentrata sull'amore per il cinema e il desiderio fisico.
François has just moved in with his partner Christine in the Vallée de Joux in Switzerland. He works as journalist in a small local newspaper. He writes a movie column on the screenings in the only cinema in town. But François knows nothing about movies and he will end up secretly copying all the articles for the review Travelling, a prestigious publication where renowned critics write. In Lausanne, where he attends some press screenings, he meets Rosa, famous critic. François and Rosa then start a perverse relationship centered on love for films and physical desire.

Di origini polacche, nasce a Losanna, dove studia lettere, nel 1975. Dopo essere stato aiuto regista di Jacqueline Veuve, esordisce firmando numerosi documentari, tra cui Celui au pasteur (ma vision personnelle des choses) e La parade (notre histoire), per poi passare ai lungometraggi di finzione con Garçon stupide cui seguiranno Un autre homme e Low cost, selezionati dal Festival del film di Locarno. Nel 2013 presenta Les Grandes Ondes (à l’Ouest), secondo capitolo della tetralogia sull’Europa dopo Comme des voleurs (à l’est) del 2006, e nel 2015 La vanité. Dal 2002 dirige il dipartimento di cinema dell’École cantonale d’art de Lausanne ed è nel 2009 tra i cofondatori della Bande à part Films.
He was born in Lausanne, where he studied Literature, in 1975 from a Polish family. After been assistant director of Jacqueline Veuve, he makes his debut with many documentaries, Celui au pasteur (ma vision personnelle des choses), two short movies Mignon à croquer and Jour de défil, he then moves on to feature-length fiction movies, such as Garçon stupide, followed by Un autre homme and Low cost, both selected by the Festival del film di Locarno. In 2013, he presented Les Grandes Ondes (à l’Ouest), the second part of the series on Europe after Comme des voleurs (à l’est) in 2006, and in 2015 La vanité. Since 2002, he has run the cinema department of the École cantonale d’art de Lausanne and in 2009 he was co-founder of the Bande à part Films.
