Nell'aprile del 1974 i giornalisti Joseph-Marie Cauvin e Julie Dujonc-Renens vengono inviati in Portogallo dalla Radio Suisse Romande per fare un reportage sugli aiuti della Svizzera ai paesi poveri. Cauvin è un giornalista di guerra che sta perdendo la memoria, Julie una convinta femminista: con loro Bob, un tecnico del suono prossimo alla pensione. Contro ogni previsione si imbatteranno in eventi di portata storica e si troveranno a documentare l’effetto della Rivoluzione dei Garofani sulle loro stesse vite. Mischiando stili filmici molto lontani fra loro, dal musical al cinema d'autore, Baier realizza una spassosa rilettura di uno dei momenti fondamentali della storia europea, riuscendo nel difficile compito di costruire una commedia politica. Il film, secondo volume della serie dedicata ai quattro punti cardinali dopo Comme des voleurs (à l’est), è stato presentato al Locarno Film Festival nel 2013.
April 1974, the journalists Joseph-Marie Cauvin and Julie Dujonc-Renens are sent to Portugal by Radio Suisse Romande to make a reportage about the Swiss aids to the poor countries. Cauvin is a war reporter who is losing his memory, Julie a true feminist: with them there's Bob, a sound technician close to retirement. Unexpectedly, they will live through historical events and report the consequences of the Carnation Revolution on their lives. Mixing several different filmic styles, from musical to authorial, Baier makes a funny reinterpretation of one of the most important moments in European history, succeeding in the hard task of making a political comedy. The film, the second volume of the series dedicated to the four cardinal points, after Comme des voleurs (à l’est), was presented at the Locarno Film Festival in 2013.
Lionel Baier
Di origini polacche, nasce a Losanna, dove studia lettere, nel 1975. Dopo essere stato aiuto regista di Jacqueline Veuve, esordisce firmando numerosi documentari, tra cui Celui au pasteur (ma vision personnelle des choses) e La parade (notre histoire), per poi passare ai lungometraggi di finzione con Garçon stupide cui seguiranno Un autre homme e Low cost (Claude Jutra), selezionati dal Festival del film di Locarno. Nel 2013 presenta Les grandes ondes (à l’ouest), secondo capitolo della tetralogia sull’Europa dopo Comme des voleurs (à l’est) del 2006, e nel 2015 La vanité. Dal 2002 dirige il dipartimento di cinema dell’École cantonale d’art de Lausanne ed è nel 2009 tra i cofondatori della Bande à part Films.
He was born in Lausanne, where he studied Literature, in 1975 from a Polish family. After been assistant director of Jacqueline Veuve, he makes his debut with many documentaries, Celui au pasteur (ma vision personnelle des choses), two short movies Mignon à croquer and Jour de défil, he then moves on to feature-length fiction movies, such as Garçon stupide, followed by Un autre homme and Low cost, both selected by the Festival del film di Locarno. In 2013, he presented Les Grandes Ondes (à l’Ouest), the second part of the series on Europe after Comme des voleurs (à l’est) in 2006, and in 2015 La vanité. Since 2002, he has run the cinema department of the École cantonale d’art de Lausanne and in 2009 he was co-founder of the Bande à part Films.
