Alla fine del XVI secolo, Julien e Marguerite de Ravalet crescono dentro il castello normanno del padre, Signore di Tourlaville. I due si amano teneramente fin da bambini e, diventati adulti, il loro affetto si trasforma in una irrefrenabile passione. Per evitare uno scandalo all'interno della comunità di Tourlaville, il padre è quindi costretto ad esiliare Julien e dare in sposa Marguerite a un ispettore delle tasse. Ma le severe misure adottate nei loro confronti non fanno altro che accrescerne la passione. Condannati dalla società per il loro amore incestuoso, i due giovani decidono quindi di fuggire.

At the end of XVI century, Julien and Marguerite de Ravalet grow up inside their father's Norman castle, Lord of Tourlaville. They tenderly love each other since they were kids and, becoming adults, their fondness transforms into an uncontrollable passion. To avoid a scandal inside the Tourlaville's community, their father is then forced to exile Julien and to marry Marguerite to a tax inspector. However the severe measures against themselves do nothing but increase their passion. Condemned by the society for their incestuous love, the two young decide to run away.

Valérie Donzelli, nata nel 1973, debutta come attrice nel film Martha… Martha di Sandrine Veysset. Dopo aver esordito alla regia con il cortometraggio Il fait beau dans la plus belle ville du monde del 2007, nel 2009 gira il suo primo lungometraggio, La Reine des Pommes. Nel 2011 gira La Guerre est déclarée, presentato al Festival di Cannes nello stesso anno. Del 2012 è Main dans la main, mentre nel frattempo continua la sua carriera da attrice per registi come Alain Guiraudie, Benoît Jacquot, Lionel Baier, Arielle Dombasle, Bertrand Bonello (tra gli altri). Nel 2015 partecipa alla competizione principale del Festival di Cannes con il suo ultimo film, Marguerite et Julien. Nel 2016 è scelta come presidente della giuria della Semaine de la Critique della 69a edizione del Festival di Cannes.

Valérie Donzelli, (1973), debuted as an actress in the movie Martha… Martha by Sandrine Veysset. After her debut as a director with the 2007 short movie Il fait beau dans la plus belle ville du monde, she directed her first feature film in 2009, The Queen of Hearts. In 2011 she directs Declaration of War, presented at the Cannes Film Festival in the same year. The following year she directed Main dans la main, while she continued her career as an actress working for such directors as Alain Guiraudie, Benoît Jacquot, Lionel Baier, Arielle Dombasle, Bertrand Bonello (among others). In 2015 she took part in the main competition of the Cannes Film Festival with her latest movie, Marguerite & Julien. In 2016 she was chosen as jury's president of the International Critic’s Week at the Cannes Film Festival 69th edition.
