Una storia d’amore e di giovinezza, a partire dalle lettere che Ingeborg Bachmann e Paul Celan, due fra le più grandi figure letterarie e poetiche del Novecento, si scambiano per diciannove lunghi anni, tra Vienna, Parigi e altre città d’Europa. Ruth Beckermann convoca due giovani interpreti in uno studio di registrazione e li mette a confronto con quel carteggio: devono leggerlo ad alta voce, ma così facendo diventano per qualche istante un po’ Paul e Ingeborg anche loro. Forse stanno per innamorarsi, forse riescono a farci innamorare. Le loro parole d’amore diventano sentimenti, esitazioni, incertezze incarnate. E il dispositivo messo in campo rimette in discussione il tempo, lo spazio e i concetti stessi di possibilità e impossibilità, chiedendoci di mettere tra parentesi, per un’ora e mezza, la nostra volontaria sospensione dell’incredulità e vivere insieme a loro questo idillio sognato e contrastato.

A story of love and youth, starting from the letters that Ingeborg Bachmann and Paul Celan, two of the greatest literary and poetic figures of the 20th century, exchanged for nineteen long years, between Vienna, Paris and other European cities. Ruth Beckermann summons two young performers to a recording studio and confronts them with that correspondence: they have to read it aloud, but in doing so they become for a few moments a little Paul and Ingeborg themselves. Perhaps they are about to fall in love, perhaps they manage to make us fall in love. Their words of love become feelings, hesitations, embodied uncertainties. And the device deployed calls into question time, space and the very concepts of possibility and impossibility, asking us to put our voluntary suspension of disbelief in brackets for an hour and a half and live with them this dreamed and thwarted idyll.
