LAMBDAPHONE

Ispirato al multisignificato dell’undicesima lettera dell’alfabeto greco LAMBDA, completo scambio di energia ed al tempo stesso, il lambda fu assunto quale simbolo di un movimento di liberazione omosessuale negli anni Settanta in quanto lettera iniziale del verbo greco lýein, "sciogliere, liberare". I tre artisti si muovono sul palco in maniera quasi telepatica, attraverso un’interazione estemporanea tra suoni e immagini. La sperimentazione di Roy Paci e Vincenzo Vasi concepisce la performance in maniera fisica, viva, luminosa; le immagini di Massimo Ottoni utilizzano i più svariati materiali per creare magie visive che non potranno che stupire.

Un bambino smarrito, di fronte a un mondo contemporaneo e ai suoi spazi vuoti, si chiede come crescere. Negli ultimi anni, Caroline Poggi e Jonathan Vinel hanno sviluppato un corpo di lavoro che si potrebbe definire radicale. Pochi registi si sono spinti come loro nel descrivere la violenza della normalità, che in Bébé Colère è esplicitamente chiamata a essere annientata, come rivela una scritta su un muro: «Fuck normality». Seguace della vivida tradizione antiumanista, il protagonista si spinge ancora oltre quando afferma: «Desidero la fine dell’umanità». Non c’è bisogno di dire che c’è poco spazio per la speranza in questo vivido ritratto del nostro tempo.

A lost baby, confronted with a contemporary world and its empty spaces, asks himself how to grow up. Over the last few years, Caroline Poggi e Jonathan Vinel have been developing a body of work one might call radical. Few directors have gone so far as they in describing the violence of normality, which in Baby Anger is explicitly called to be eradicated, as an inscription on a wall reveals: «Fuck normality». A follower of the vivid anti-humanist tradition, the protagonist goes even one step further as he states: «I wish for the end of humanity». No need to say that there is little room left for hope in this vivid portrait of our time.

La storia di una famiglia americana raccontata attraverso i primi vent’anni di vita di Jesse, dalla nascita al college, mentre si avvicendano fortune e sfortune della provincia statunitense, e molti non detti si accumulano finché non sono costretti a esplodere. Un viaggio contemplativo in un mondo che appare pulito e senza macchia e invece omette e nasconde. La voce fuoricampo conduce lo spettatore in una storia di ipocrisie e di insuccessi, con una struttura che mischia narrazione classica e distacco documentaristico, senza nascondere intenti autobiografici.

The story of an America family told through the first twenty years of Jesse’s life, from birth to college, as fortunes and misfortunes of the US province alternate, and many unspoken things accumulate until they are forced to explode. A contemplative journey into a world that appears clean and spotless and instead omits and hides. The voice over leads the viewer into a story of hypocrisy and failure, with a structure that mixes classic narrative and documentary detachment, without hiding autobiographical intentions.

João Pedro Rodrigues e João Rui Guerra da Mata si incontrano nel 1991 e iniziano a conoscersi al ritmo delle canzoni de Les parapluies de Cherbourg di Jacques Demy che Rodrigues aveva avuto modo di incontrare nel 1983, in occasione della presentazione di Una camera in città, da cui il cortometraggio prende il titolo. Nella loro stanza del cuore Demy occupa un posto di prim’ordine e Um Quarto na Cidade è un omaggio pieno di riferimenti – vocali e visuali – alle opere di un maestro scomparso prematuramente, falciato dall’aids. Se il tempo/serpente sembra smantellare e inghiottire ogni cosa – le persone amate, le opere, gli ideali politici –, in verità anche l’istante più fugace si inscrive nell’infinità. Dalle ceneri del tempo umano, l’opera di Demy è così osservata nel suo divenire un radioso frammento di eternità.

João Pedro Rodrigues and João Rui Guerra da Mata met in 1991 and began to get to know each other to the rhythm of the songs of Jacques Demy’s Les parapluies de Cherbourg that Rodrigues had the opportunity to meet in 1983, on the occasion of the presentation of Une chambre en ville, from which the short film takes its title. For them, Demy holds a special place in their hearts and Um Quarto na Cidade is a tribute full of – vocal and visual – references to the films of a master who died prematurely, worn out by AIDS. If the time/snake seems to dismantle and swallow everything – beloved ones, works, political ideals –, even the most fleeting moment is actually inscribed in infinity. From the ashes of human time, Demy’s work is thus observed in its becoming a radiant fragment of eternity.

Sad Cowboy Platonic Love

Era Clotaire, anno 103: un feroce drago ritenuto estinto da generazioni è appena riapparso. La regina invia un messaggio in tutta la terra per evitare la catastrofe. C’è qualche eroe in grado di salvare il regno? Nel suo film d’esordio, Ciel Sourdeau sfrutta appieno il potenziale queer del cinema di genere, di cui il bricolage e il mascheramento sono sempre stati componenti essenziali. Sviluppa una fiaba anarchica che reinventa in modo molto espressivo le figure del cowboy e del drago e sovverte la struttura lineare del racconto d’avventura convenzionale. L’ultima battuta del film, che suona come una lezione di vita, non dovrebbe mai essere dimenticata: «Qualsiasi tipo di disciplina deve essere smantellata!».

Clotaire Era, year 103: a fierce dragon thought extinct for generations has just reappeared. The queen sends a message throughout the land to avoid the catastrophe. Is there any hero to save the kingdom? In his debut film, Ciel Sourdeau fully exploits the queer potential of genre cinema, of which bricolage and masquerade have always been essential components. He develops an anarchistic fairy tale that reinvents in a very expressive way the figures of the cowboy and the dragon and subverts the linear structure of the conventional adventure story. Its last line, which sounds like a life lesson, should never be forgotten: «Any kind of discipline shall be dismantled!».

Un uomo, ossessionato dai volatili e dalle auto, racconta il suo sprofondare nella depressione a uomini e donne che gli danno un passaggio in auto. La dismorfofobia del protagonista, ovvero la tendenza a vedersi deformati e diversi da quello che si è, non si limita alla sua psiche: l’intero film, fatto di frammenti, footage presi da internet, immagini distorte e caleidoscopi, si specchia continuamente e ritrova un mondo perturbante e senza forma. La voce fuori campo del protagonista, che spia la realtà e cerca continuamente di riconoscerla, accompagna sia gli autisti delle macchine che lo spettatore in ossessioni e aneddoti di una vita che non sa più dove trovare l’equilibrio.

A man, obsessed with birds and cars, tells about his sinking into depression to men and women who give him a ride in their car. The protagonist’s dysmorphophobia, or the tendency to see himself deformed and different from what he is, is not limited to his psyche: the entire film, made up of fragments, footage taken from the Internet, distorted images and kaleidoscopes, looks itself in the mirror and discovers an uncanny and formless world. The voice over of the protagonist, who spies on reality and continually tries to recognize it, accompanies both the car drivers and the viewer inside obsessions and anecdotes of a life that does not know where to find balance.

Un utero, due tube, un’ovaia, e dubbi. Un diario investigativo che esplora la crescita sessuale di una donna, tra interventi chirurgici, sensazioni nuove e incontro/scontro con l’immaginario pornografico. La donna avrà delle risposte o accumulerà solo altre domande? Il corpo è un archivio che raggruppa tutte le informazioni su ciò che gli succede, compresi gli oggetti e gli eventi osservati dall’occhio. La sessualità, vissuta e guardata, segue un meccanismo sempre uguale nelle sue dinamiche, ma provoca un piacere istintivo di difficile categorizzazione. Lavorare sull’archivio della sessualità permette di trovare dei punti costanti e delle ripetizioni, ma non permette di chiudere il cerchio e di capire qualsiasi possibilità.

One uterus, two tubes, one ovary, and doubts. An investigative diary that explores the sexual growth of a woman, including surgical interventions, new sensations and encounter/confrontation with the pornographic imagination. Will the woman have answers or will she just accumulate more questions?
The body is an archive that groups all the information on what happens to it, including objects and events observed by the eye. Sexuality, experienced and looked at, follows a mechanism that is always the same in its dynamics, but causes an instinctive pleasure that is difficult to categorize. Working on the archive of sexuality allows you to find constant points and repetitions, but it does not allow you to close the circle and understand any possibility.

Intrappolato in una nave da carico durante il lockdown, Kerel, un marinaio filippino gay, fugge attraverso la sua memoria e ricorda il suo complicato passato, presente e futuro sé. Questo film sperimentale, ibridando finzione e documentario, è un’evocazione delle complessità dell’identità personale e nazionale prescritte dalla memoria. Il film mescola immagini d’archivio con testi, filmati e found footage per tessere la complessa narrazione dalla prospettiva del protagonista marinaio bloccato in mare, fronteggiato da navi cinesi mentre rievoca il rapporto con se stesso, il suo amante, la sua famiglia e il suo paese.

Trapped in a cargo ship during the lockdown, Kerel, a gay Filipino seafarer escapes through his memory, and recalls his complicated past, present, and future self. The hybrid experimental documentary fiction film is an evocation of the complexities of personal and national identity prescribed by one’s memory. The film mixes archival images with texts, filmed and found footage to weave the complex narrative from the perspective of a seafarer stranded at sea, confronted by Chinese ships while recalling his relationship with himself, his lover, his family, and his country.

Charlie Chaplin è un nome familiare, ma praticamente nessuno conosce la sua mentore Mabel Normand, che lo ha scelto per il suo primo ruolo. I film di cineaste pioniere come Alice Guy, che ha realizzato il primo film di finzione in assoluto, e Germaine Dulac, che ha portato il surrealismo sullo schermo prima di Luis Buñuel, sono scomparsi dalla lista dei film da vedere assolutamente. Cosa vale la pena ricordare? Chi decide cosa è degno di essere ricordato? Attraverso estratti di film diretti da registe donne tra il 1896 e il 1940, Juliette Klinke mette in discussione i suoi riferimenti nel cinema, ciò che le è stato insegnato e tramandato e immagina un nuovo futuro della storia del cinema che includa anche le cineaste.

La vita di Santiago è un caos emotivo, un accumulo di frustrazioni e angosce che cerca di nascondere con una fuga permanente dalla realtà. E poco importa se a soffrire sono sua madre Isabel, il suo ex compagno Luis oppure sua figlia Laila. Santiago è incapace di conciliare i suoi bisogni intimi, i suoi amanti e il flusso dei suoi desideri con i mandati della società, la responsabilità di essere padre, di essere presente, di fungere da modello per una figlia che soffre anche della permanente assenza della madre. Oltre a vantare un'ottima fotografia ed un'impeccabile messa in scena, il film è sostenuto soprattutto dall'autentico tour-de-force di Leonardo Sbaraglia che si mette a nudo (letteralmente ed emotivamente), dimostrando di essere un attore capace di uscire dalla sua comfort zone e di affrontare i demoni di un personaggio estremo, scomodo e decisamente contraddittorio.

Santiago's life is an emotional chaos, an accumulation of frustrations and anguish that he tries to hide with a permanent escape from reality. And it doesn't matter if the victim of his choices are his mother Isabel, his former partner Luis or his daughter Laila. Santiago cannot reconcile his intimate needs, his lovers and the flow of his desires with the mandates of society, the responsibility of being a father, of being present, of being a role model for his daughter who also suffers from the permanent absence of her mother. In addition to a remarkable photography and mise-en-scène, the film is completely supported by the authentic tour-de-force of Leonardo Sbaraglia who gets naked (literally and emotionally) in front of the camera, proving to be an actor capable of stretching his comfort zone and of facing the demons of an extreme, uncomfortable and clearly contradictory character.
