La mujer fantástica descritta nel quinto film del cileno Sebastián Lelio è la ventisettenne Marina, felicemente fidanzata col cinquantenne Orlando. Ma l’idillio non è destinato a durare e la notte del compleanno di lei Orlando muore per un malore improvviso. Fin dal suo arrivo in ospedale col fidanzato in fin di vita, la transgender Marina si ritrova sotto attacco da parte di quasi tutti i personaggi che la circondano, a partire dal medico del pronto soccorso che la denuncia senza un apparente motivo, e culminando con i componenti della precedente famiglia di Orlando, l’ex moglie e il figlio adulto. L’elaborazione del lutto, suggerisce Lelio, quando si è una donna transgender appare particolarmente complicata. E lo è perché ad aggiungersi al dolore vi sono il mancato riconoscimento di un’identità e di un legame, quando non la loro palese e brutale rimozione. Girato utilizzando uno stile tragicomico, ipnotico e seducente, Una mujer fantástica ci mostra il racconto intimo e sofferto di una coraggiosa riappropriazione del sé. 

The described in the fifth film by Chilean director Sebastián Lelio is the 27-year-old Marina, happily engaged with fifty-year-old Orlando. However, the idyll is not meant to last and on the night of Marina’s birthday Orlando dies from a sudden illness. Since her arrival at the hospital with her clinging-to-life fiancé, transgender Marina finds herself under attack by almost all the characters that surround her, starting with the doctor in the emergency room who presses charges against her without any apparent reason, culminating in the meeting with the members of Orlando’s former family, namely his ex-wife and his adult son. As Lelio suggests, being a transgender woman can make the elaboration of mourning quite an excruciating experience, considering that, in addition to the pain, that person has to deal with a society which fails to recognize – or even worst represses – her identity and her affectional bonds. Shot using a tragicomic, hypnotic and seductive style, shows us the intimate and suffered story of a courageous re-appropriation of the Self.
