Ana Bauch, una professoressa di lettere in una piccola città ungherese, consiglia ai suoi studenti di vedere il film Poeti dall’inferno di Agnieszka Holland sulla vita di Rimbaud per aiutarli a comprendere meglio il simbolismo delle sue poesie e l’epoca in cui furono scritte. Ma il padre di uno degli studenti reputa il film immorale: è l'inizio del calvario di Ana, vittima di preside, colleghi, genitori, media e commissioni di inchiesta che diventano paladini del benessere dei ragazzi. Vittima soprattutto di conformismo, invidia e paura. Forse solo gli studenti le potranno regalare qualche speranza.
Ispirato ad un fatto di cronaca, il primo lungometraggio di Katalin Moldovai affronta in modo lucido e intelligente il dibattito sulla libertà di pensiero e di espressione. Tutto è ordinato e luminoso ma la scuola è una dolce prigione delle apparenze e dell'ordine da mantenere a tutti i costi, uno specchio purtroppo fin troppo fedele della società in cui viviamo.

Ana Bauch, a literature teacher in a small Hungarian town, recommends that his students watch Agnieszka Holland's film Total Eclipse about the life of Rimbaud to help them better understand the symbolism of his poems and the time period in which they were written. But the father of one of the students considers the film immoral: it’s the beginning of Ana’s ordeal, she is victim of the school director, the colleagues, the parents, the media and the commissions of inquiry that brandish the argument of the teenagers’ well-being. She is victim of conformism, envy and fear. Maybe only the students could give her some hope.
Inspired by a true story, Katalin Moldovai's first feature film focuses in a clear and clever manner on the debate about freedom of thought and expression. Everything is tidy and bright, but the school is a sweet prison where law and order rule, regrettably a realistic mirror of the society we live in.

È nata in Romania nel 1982. Ha conseguito la laurea in Film e Media nel 2013 presso l'Università Sapientia Transylvanian Ungherese di Cluj-Napoca. Ha continuato i suoi studi in Ungheria presso l'Università Metropolitana di Budapest, dove ha conseguito il Master in regia televisiva e cinematografica nel 2017. Durante questo periodo ha diretto sei cortometraggi, principalmente fiction. Il suo cortometraggio As up to now (2019) ha vinto un premio Cinefondation al 72esimo Festival di Cannes. Il suo primo lungometraggio, Without Air (2023), è stato selezionato al Toronto IFF e proiettato in numerosi altri festival in tutto il mondo fra cui il Trieste Film Festival.

She was born in Romania in 1982. She obtained her BA degree in Film and Media studies in 2013 at the Sapientia Transylvanian Hungarian University in Cluj-Napoca. She continued her studies in Hungary at the Budapest Metropolitan University, where she earned her MA degree in Television and Film directing in 2017. During this period she directed six short movies, mainly fiction. Her short As up to now (2019) was nominated for a Cinefondation award at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival. Her feature debut, Without Air (2023), has been selected at the Toronto IFF and screened in many other festivals worldwide, for example the Trieste Film Festival.
