Il regista tedesco di cinema, teatro e opera Werner Schroeter si definisce da sé come un dinosauro di un’altra epoca, “quando si sognava la massima libertà nel cinema”. La regista Monika Treut lo visita sul set del suo film Deux a Parigi, e lo ritrova poi a Düsseldorf durante la produzione dell’opera Norma.
Un incontro ai vertici nell’Olimpo dei registi del cinema tedesco di fine Novecento, meno conosciuti ma non per questo meno grandi.

The late German film, theatre and opera director Werner Schroeter is a self-proclaimed dinosaur from another age, “when people dreamed of ultimate freedom in film”. Filmmaker Monika Treut visits him on the set of his feature Deux in Paris, and then in Düsseldorf during the production of the opera Norma.
A meeting of two giant directors of late 900s cinema, they are little known but not for this smaller than others.

Esponente centrale della cinematografia indipendente tedesca, ha dato un impulso decisivo al nascente New Queer Cinema della fine degli anni ’80. Nata nel 1954 a Mönchengladbach, Germania, studia letteratura e scienze politiche per poi diventare dottore di ricerca con una tesi su La donna crudele: immagini femminili negli scritti del Marchese De Sade e di Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. Inizia a lavorare con il video negli anni ’70, anche se intanto prosegue i suoi studi in filologia. Fonda la Hyena Filmproduktion con Elfi Mikesch nel 1984, e realizza il suo primo film Seduction: The Cruel Woman, sulle pratiche sessuali sadomaso, nel 1985. Collabora con personalità come Annie Sprinkle e Werner Schroeter, e si dedica spesso al documentario come nel caso di Gendernauts (1999). Dopo il Teddy Award per Zona Norte (2016) alla Berlinale, vince allo stesso festival il Teddy Award alla carriera l’anno successivo.

Central exponent of German independent cinema, she gave a decisive impetus to the first New Queer Cinema of the late 1980s. Born in 1954 in Mönchengladbach, Germany, she studied literature and political science and then took her PhD degree with a thesis on The Cruel Woman: female images in the works by Marquis De Sade and Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. She began working with video in 1970s, although in the meantime she continued her studies in philology. She founded Hyena Filmproduktion with Elfi Mikesch in 1984, and she made her first feature film Seduction: The Cruel Woman, about sadomasochistic sexual practices, in 1985. She collaborated with artists and performers such as Annie Sprinkle and Werner Schroeter, and she often dedicated herself to documentaries such as in the case of Gendernauts (1999). After the Teddy Award for Zona Norte (2016) at the Berlinale, she won the Teddy Award for lifetime achievement at the same festival the following year.
