Outraged by the 2021 bombing of Gaza, Palestinian queer activists Hamza and Walid recruit novelist Jean Genet to sabotage the Eurovision singing contest in Jericho with the help of Buddy and Pedro, Toronto's famous naked gay penguins. The emergence of queer BDS (boycott, divestment, sanctions) as a dynamic, Palestinian-led global movement is brought to life through interviews and actions, opera and agitprop, protests and jokes.
Chronicling fifteen years of passionate activism in Toronto and around the world, Photo Booth juxtaposes a surreal operatic narrative with documentary scenes exploring pride and pinkwashing, gay soldiers and homonationalism. Queer activists Ghadir Shafie, Judith Butler, Ali Abunimah, and others chronicle the victories and setbacks of this emerging social justice movement. Genet transforms into a digital activist trying to navigate his way through the various challenges of megaphones and photo booths, dodecaphones and split screen, frisbees and tear gas, Gaga and Gaza, solidarity and silence.
