Lionel Soukaz

Regista ed ex-attivista del Front homosexuel d’action révolutionnaire, nel 1978-1979 dirige Race d'Ep, histoire d'un siècle d'homosessualité con Guy Hocquenghem e nel 1991 inizia a girare i Journal Annales, che ad oggi contano oltre 2000 ore di registrazione. Soukaz ha donato il Journal Annales alla Bibliothèque nationale de France, e collabora dal 2009 con il regista Stéphane Gérard per produrre film montati utilizzando selezioni di questi nastri. Nel 2017 ha ricevuto il Premio Nino Gennaro.

Filmmaker and former activist in the Front homosexuel d’action révolutionnaire, in 1978-1979 he directed Race d’Ep, histoire d’un siècle d’homosexualité with Guy Hocquenghem and in 1991 he began his Journal Annales, which today features over 2000 hours of tape. Soukaz donated the Journal Annales to the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and he has collaborated since 2009 with the filmmaker Stéphane Gérard to produce edited films using selections from these tapes. In 2017 he received the Nino Gennaro Award.

His experimental cinema focuses on political struggles and the history of representations of gender, sexual orientation, AIDS, and racialized people. His practice incorporates reflection on audiovisual archives, programming (Lionel Soukaz: A Queer Avant-garde Pioneer, 2016; Libérations Sexuelles, Révolutions Visuelles, 2017; Black Archive, 2020) and distribution of What’s Your Flavor?, a collective dedicated to the dissemination of queer experimental cinema in France.
