La Giuria internazionale della quattordicesima edizione del Sicilia Queer filmfest 2024, ha il compito di scegliere il miglior cortometraggio della sezione competitiva Queer Short e il miglior lungometraggio della sezione Nuove Visioni, opere prime e seconde e nuovi sguardi non necessariamente legati a tematiche GLBT.

Attore teatrale e cinematografico francese nonché regista, viene scoperto al cinema all’età di 16 anni con Les Amoureux (1994) di Catherine Corsini, e recita poco dopo nel primo film di Gaël Morel, A toute vitesse (1996). Incontra il cineasta Laurent Achard con Plus qu’hier, moins que demain (1997) e diventa il suo attore feticcio: gireranno assieme Le Dernier des fous (2006), Dernière séance (2011), Le Tableau (2013) e Un, parfois deux (2016), episodio della serie Cinéma, de notre temps. Le sue collaborazioni spaziano da Jean-Claude Biette a Hélène Angèle, da Robert Guédiguian a Pierre Léon (con Deux Rémi, deux del 2015), da Jérôme Reybaud (con Jours de France del 2016, in concorso al Sicilia Queer filmfest 2017) a Christophe Honoré, e tanti altri ancora. Attore e complice di Paul Vecchiali negli anni Dieci nel 2000, gira con lui Nuits blanches sur la jetée (2014), nella sezione Panorama Queer del Sicilia Queer filmfest 2015, C’est l’amour (2015) e Bonjour la langue (2023). A teatro è allievo di Maurice Bénichou e recita sotto la direzione di Arthur Nauzyciel e di Laurent Mauvignier. Il suo primo cortometraggio da regista è Valérie n’est plus ici (2009), ed è seguito dai mediometraggi Monsieur Lapin (2013), Hugues (2017) – premiato al festival Côté Court – e Une habitude de jeune homme (2019).

French theater and film actor as well as film director, he was discovered at the movies at the age of 16 with Les Amoureux (1994) by Catherine Corsini, and acted shortly afterwards in Gaël Morel, A toute vitesse (1996). He meets the filmmaker Laurent Achard with Plus qu’hier, moins que demain (1997) and becomes his most trusted actor: together they sign Le Dernier des fous (2006), Dernière séance (2011), Le tableau (2013) and Un, parfois deux (2016), episode from the series Cinéma, de notre temps. His collaborations range from Jean-Claude Biette to Hélène Angèle, from Robert Guédiguian to Pierre Léon (with Deux Rémi, Deux in 2015), from Jérôme Reybaud (whose 2016’s Jours de France was in the New Visions competition at the Sicilia Queer filmfest 2017) to Christophe Honoré, and so many others. Actor and accomplice of Paul Vecchiali in the 2010s, he shot with him Nuits blanches sur la jetée (2014), which was in the Panorama Queer section of the Sicilia Queer filmfest 2015, C’est l’amour (2015) and Bonjour la langue (2023). At the theatre he was pupil of Maurice Bénichou and acted under the direction of Arthur Nauzyciel and Laurent Mauvignier. His first short film as a director was Valérie n’est plus ici (2009), which was followed by the medium-length films Monsieur Lapin (2013), Hugues (2017) – awarded at the Côté Court festival – and Une habitude de jeune homme (2019).

Nato nel 1971, ha studiato letteratura e filosofia e ha una laurea in film studies con una tesi sui film di Jacques Rivette. Nel 2009 è stato curatore del progetto Manga Impact dedicato all’animazione giapponese. Nel 2011 ha fondato al Filmcommission Vallée d’Aoste che ha diretto fino al 2012. Ha svolto il ruolo di direttore artistico del Festival di Locarno per sei edizioni (dal 2013 al 2018) e del Festival di Berlino dal 2019 al 2024. Ha avuto l’incarico di programmer per festival come l’Alba Film Festival, il fiorentino Festival dei Popoli, il Visions du Réel. Come giornalista, autore e programmer, ha collaborato con diverse riviste come Filmcritica, Cineforum, Duellanti, Panoramique e con diverse realtà come il Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino e la Cinémathèque Suisse di Losanna; ha pubblicato saggi e monografie, nonché tenuto seminari e workshop, su registi come Nanni Moretti, Maurizio Nichetti, Errol Morris, Johan van der Keuken, Frederick Wiseman, Claire Simon, Nicolas Philibert. Ha curato retrospettive su Ernst Lubitsch, Vincente Minnelli, Otto Preminger, e sul cinema d’animazione giapponese. Ha fatto da giurato al BAFICI di Buenos Aires, a Jeonju, a Morelia, al Cinéma du Réel di Parigi, a Sarajevo, al Sundance, a Toronto. È membro dell’Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Born in 1971, Chatrian studied literature and philosophy and also holds a degree in film studies, with a thesis on the films by Jacques Rivette. In 2009 he was curator of the Manga Impact project, dedicated to Japanese animation. In 2011 he founded the Filmcommission Vallée d’Aoste, whom he directed until 2012. He served as artistic director in Locarno for six editions (from 2013 to 2018) and in Berlin from 2019 to 2024. He has been a programmer for festivals like Alba Film Festival, Florence Festival dei Popoli and Visions du Réel. As a journalist, author and programmer, he collaborated for several magazines like Filmcritica, Cineforum, Duellanti, Panoramique and different realities like the National Film Museum (Turin) and the Cinémathèque Suisse (Losanna); he has published essays and monographs on filmmakers such as Nanni Moretti, Errol Morris, Johan van der Keuken, Frederick Wiseman, Claire Simon, Nicolas Philibert. He has curated retrospectives on Ernst Lubitsch, Vincente Minnelli, Otto Preminger, and on Japanese Animation. He served as Juror in Buenos Aires (Bafici), Jeonjiu, Morelia, Paris (Cinema du Reel), Sarajevo, Sundance, Toronto. He is member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Anna Hints

Classe 1982 e originaria di Tartu (Estonia), è regista, sceneggiatrice e compositrice. Ha studiato letteratura e folklore estone e letteratura comparata, e ha conseguito la laurea in direzione della fotografia e regia. Il suo cortometraggio Free World, realizzato mentre era studente, le vale lo Young Filmmaker Award dedicato a Kaljo Kiisa e il premio al miglior cortometraggio nazionale al Black Nights Film Festival 2012. Più di 90 festival del cinema hanno selezionato il suo cortometraggio d’esordio, Ice (2017), con cui ha vinto ben 14 premi compreso il Premio al Miglior Cortometraggio agli oscar estoni Estonian Film and Television Awards (EFTA) del 2018. In quegli anni ha cominciato a manifestare una spiccata sensibilità per l’analisi sociale e geografica delle condizioni delle donne e dell’ambiente: a dimostrarlo non c’è solo la colonna sonora composta con il gruppo trio EETER per il Wind Sculpted Land (2018) di Joosep Matjus, incentrato sulla natura estone, ma anche il corto documentario For Tomorrow Paradise Arrives (2021), sullo spreco del cibo, e la co-regia con Tushar Prakash Kissing Your Tongue (2022), ambientato nell’India che è stata per 5 anni la sua seconda casa. La musica per Wind Sculpted Land è riconosciuta con il Best Composer award agli EFTA 2019. Il suo ultimo film, Smoke Sauna Sisterhood (2023), premiato al Sundance 2023 per la Miglior Regia, ha vinto il premio per il miglior documentario europeo agli European Film Awards, oltre a vari altri premi e nomination. La sua ultima collaborazione con il partner creativo Tushar Parkash, il corto di finzione Sauna Day, è stata selezionata per la Settimana della Critica di Cannes 2024.

Born in 1982 and originally from Tartu (Estonia), she is a director, screenwriter and composer. She studied Estonian Literature, Folklore and Comparative Literature, and she got a degree in Cinematography and Film Direction. Her short film Free World, made while she was a student, was awarded with the Kaljo Kiisa named Young Filmmaker award and with the Best National Short Film at the 2012 Black Nights Film Festival. More than 90 film festivals selected her debut short film, Ice (2017), that leads her to win 14 awards including Best Short Film at the 2018 Estonian Film and Television Awards (EFTA), the Estonian Oscars. In those years she began to show a strong sensitivity for the social and geographical analysis of women’s conditions and the environment: this is demonstrated not only by the soundtrack composed with the trio group EETER for Joosep Majus’s Wind Sculpted Land (2018), which focuses on Estonian natura, but also by the short documentary For Tomorrow Paradise Arrives (2021), about food waste, and the co-direction with Tushar Prakash Kissing Your Tongue (2022), set in India which has been her second home for 5 years. The music for Wind Sculpted Land was recognized with the Best Composition award at the 2019 EFTA. Her latest film, Smoke Sauna Sisterhood (2023), which was awarded at Sundance 2023 for Best Direction, won the award for Best European Documentary at the European Film Awards, beyond various other prizes and nominations. Marie Luise Lehner

Nasce a Vienna nel 1995, è regista, autrice e musicista punk. Ha studiato all’Institut for Language Arts all’University di Arti Applicate, poi sceneggiatura e drammaturgia all’Accademia del Cinema di Vienna con Jessica Hausner, oltre che pittura contestuale all’Accademia di Belle Arti della stessa città con Ashley Hans Scheirl. Scrive sceneggiature e opere di prosa. Ha pubblicato due romanzi, Fliegenpilze aus Kork (2017) e Im Blick (2018). Le sue opere letterarie hanno vinto numerosi premi. Ha realizzato sei cortometraggi fra il 2015 e il 2023, Nichts, Kaugummizigaretten, Don’t Fuck with the Diva, Geh Vau, Mein Hosenschlitz ist offen. Wie mein Herz. e Im Traum sind alle Quallen feucht. Per il corto Kaugummizigaretten ha vinto il Local Artist Award al Crossing Europe Festival. Sta lavorando al montaggio del suo primo lungometraggio, Wenn du Angst has nimmst du dein Herz in den Mund und lächelst, con la compagnia di produzione Geyrhalterfilm a Vienna. Suona nella band punk femminista Schapka, fondata nel 2012 quando le componenti della band avevano tra i 14 e i 17 anni. Con la band si è esibita ad eventi come il popfest di Vienna.

Born in 1995 in Vienna, she is movie director, author and punk musician. She has attended the Institute for Language Arts at the University of Applied Arts, and then she has studied screenwriting and dramaturgy at the Vienna Film Academy with Jessica Hausner, as well as contextual painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in the same city with Ashley Hans Scheirl. She writes screenplay and prose works. She has published two novels, Fliegenpilze aus Kork (2017) and Im Blick (2018). Her literary works have won numerous awards. She made six short films between 2015 and 2023: Nichts, Kaugummizigaretten, Don’t Fuck with the Diva, Geh Vau, Mein Hosenschlitz ist offen. Wie mein Herz. e Im Traum sind alle Quallen feucht. For the short Kaugummizigaretten she has won the Local Artist Award at the Crossing Europe Festival. She is currently working on the editing of her first feature film, Wenn du Angst has nimmst du dein Herz in den Mund und lächelst, at the Geyrhalterfilm production company in Vienna. She plays in the feminist punk band Schapka, founded in 2012 when the band members were aged between 14 and 17. With the band she has performed at events such as the popfest Wien.

Jara Yáñez

Direttrice della rivista Caimán. Cuadernos de Cine da gennaio 2022, lavora per la rivista sin dalla sua fondazione come Cahiers du cinéma. Spagna nel 2007. Dal 2014 è docente del Master di Critica Cinematografica presso l’ECAM e collabora regolarmente al programma Storia del nostro cinema su TVE. Si è laureata in Storia dell’Arte presso l’Universidad Autónoma di Madrid, dove ha successivamente conseguito un dottorato in Storia del cinema; è autrice di libri sulla produzione, sulle proiezioni in versione originale sottotitolata e sul cortometraggio spagnolo, oltre ad altri testi per libri collettivi sull’industria cinematografica e su autori come Isabel Coixet, Pilar Miró, Mercedes Álvarez o Bong Joon-ho. Ha fatto parte del comitato di programmazione di DocumentaMadrid in due diverse fasi (dal 2009 al 2011 e dal 2017 al 2019), collabora con il comitato di selezione dei cortometraggi del Festival di Alcalá de Henares dal 2011 e ha curato due cicli audiovisivi per bambini all’interno del quadro del programma Museocinema del Museo Centro Nazionale d’Arte Reina Sofía. Sull’introduzione della prospettiva di genere nella critica e nell’analisi cinematografica ha pubblicato il libro Femenino plural (curato con Andrea Morán nel 2017).

Director of the magazine Caimán. Cuadernos de Cine since January 2022, she has been working on its publication since its foundation as Cahiers du Cinéma. Spain in 2007. Since 2014 she has also worked as a professor at the Master of Film Criticism at the ECAM, and she regularly collaborates on the History of our cinema program on the Spanish Television. She has graduated in History of Art from the Universidad Autónoma in Madrid, where she subsequently obtained a PhD in History of Cinema; she is the author of books on film production, on original subtitled version projection of movies and on Spanish short films, as well as other texts for omnibus dedicated to various studies on the film industry or on authors such as Isabel Coixet, Pilar Miró, Mercedes Álvarez o Bong Joon-ho. She was part of the DocumentaMadrid programming committee in two different phases (from 2009 to 2011 and from 2017 to 2019), she collaborates with the short film selection committee of the Alcalá de Henares Festival since 2011 and she has curated two audiovisual cycles for children all within the framework of the Museocinema program of the Reina Sofía National Art Center Museum. She published the book Femenino plural (edited with Andrea Morán in 2017) on the introduction of the gender perspective into film criticism and analysis.
