Negli anni Trenta, in piena Grande Depressione, il giornalista Burke Devlin incontra un gruppo di acrobati del cielo: l’ex eroe di guerra Roger Shumann, sua moglie Laverne e il meccanico Jiggs. Shumann è ossessionato dalla passione per il volo ed è pronto a sacrificargli ogni cosa, anche la famiglia; Laverne è il centro di attrazione attorno a cui tutto gravita, compreso l’amore di Jiggs e di Devlin. Ma un senso di morte e di pessimismo attraversa il film, splendidamente fotografato da Irving Glassberg in un bianco e nero che accenta la cupezza e la luminosità di personaggi intrappolati nelle loro vite. In the ’30s, amid the Great Depression, journalist Burke Devlin encounters a group of sky acrobats: the veteran Roger Shumann, his wife Laverne, and the mechanic Jiggs. Shumann is consumed by his passion for flight, willing to sacrifice everything, including his family. Laverne serves as the gravitational center of the story, drawing in the affections of both Jiggs and Devlin. However, a pervasive sense of death and obscurity permeates the entire film, beautifully captured by the cinematographer Irving Glassberg in a striking black and white that accentuates the characters' gloom and lightness as they find themselves ensnared in their own lives. The film unfolds as a danse macabre marked by circularity, revealing, as noted by Jean-Loup Bourget, the pitiful and grotesque legacy of the First World War.
