Le Onnagata, nella tradizione del teatro giapponese, sono gli uomini che interpretano i personaggi femminili. Tamasaburo Bando è una delle Onnagata più celebri, in grado di interpretare figure di donne non sulla base di un’idea di imitazione ma per coglierne la reale essenza e restituirla tramite il ballo, il movimento, lo sguardo.
Daniel Schmid viaggia in Giappone per catturare la filosofia più profonda dell’arte delle Onnegata, rinunciando alla struttura classica del documentario ma concentrandosi sulle performance di Bando e di altri artisti, per indagare cosa significhino l’identità e il genere sessuale nel magico reame del palcoscenico del teatro Kabuki. Le soluzioni non sono semplici, e trovano in questa straordinaria tradizione non un piano sostitutivo per allontanare le donne dalla recitazione, ma un’occasione arricchente per esplorare i confini fra essenza del femminile e sua percezione, mentre il film costruisce un raffinatissimo apparato formale che ipnotizza.

Onnagata, in the tradition of Japanese theater, are men who play female characters. Tamasaburo Bando is one of the most famous Onnagata, able to interpret female figures not on the basis of an idea of imitation but to catch their real essence and return it through dance, movement, gaze.
Daniel Schmid travels to Japan to capture the deepest philosophy of Onnegata’s art, giving up on the classic documentary structure but focusing on the performances of Bando and other artists, in order to survey what identity and sexual gender mean in the magical realm of the stage of Kabuki theater. The solutions are not simple, and they find in this extraordinary tradition not a substitute plan to distance women from acting, but an enriching opportunity to explore the boundaries between the essence of the feminine and its perception, while the film builds a highly refined formal apparatus that mesmerizes.

Nato nel 1941 e morto nel 2006, è regista cinematografico e teatrale. Mentre le sue regie teatrali spaziano dalle opere di Alban Berg a quelle di Vincenzo Bellini, rivelando il suo spiccato animo lirico, le sue regie cinematografiche vengono mostrate nei festival di tutto il mondo, dalla Berlinale che nel 1982 accolse Ecate fino al festival di Cannes che nel 1999 selezionò Beresina oder die letzten Tage der Schweiz nel concorso Un Certain Regard. Le vicinanze con il regista tedesco Rainer Werner Fassbinder non si limitano alla condivisione della passione per il melodramma, ma toccano collaborazioni come la sceneggiatura di L’ombra degli angeli (1976), a firma di entrambi. Nel 1999 ha ricevuto il Pardo d’onore alla carriera al festival di Locarno.

Born in 1941 and died in 2006, he was a film and theater director. While his theater directions ranged from Alban Berg’s works to Vincenzo Bellini’s ones, revealing his strong lyrical soul, his cinematographic directions were shown at festivals all over the world, from the Berlinale who welcomed Hecate in 1982, to the Cannes Film Festival who in 1999 selected Beresina oder die letzten Tage der Schweiz in the Un Certain Regard competition. The closeness with the German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder was not limited to sharing a passion for melodrama, because it involved collaborations such as the screenplay for Schatten der Engel (1976), signed by both. In 1999 he received the Leopard of Honour for Lifetime Achievement at the Locarno Film Festival.
