Due coppie di protagonisti intrecciano sentimenti e passioni in un ritratto familiare spietato e intenso. Kyle e Marylee Hadley sono gli eredi, ricchi e tormentati, di un petroliere texano. Mitch Wayne è l’amico d’infanzia di Kyle, nonché il figlio che il vecchio Jasper Hadley avrebbe sempre desiderato; Lucy un’impiegata dell’azienda, che si sposerà con Kyle e da cui lui vorrebbe avere un figlio. In un film che abbonda di simboli fallici, impotenza e sterilità, alcolismo, infedeltà e sensi di colpa sono al centro di un dramma che parte dalla conclusione, annunciandosi sin dai titoli di testa, e che si svolgerà tutto in flashback. Un’altra pietra miliare del Technicolor nonché il film che rivela le grandi affinità di Robert Stack e Dorothy Malone (che vinse l’Oscar come migliore attrice non protagonista) con un regista come Sirk. Da un’idea di Albert Zugsmith, che di lì a poco avrebbe prodotto tra gli altri L’infernale Quinlan di Orson Welles.

Two pairs of protagonists intertwine feelings and passions in a ruthless and intense family portrait. Kyle and Marylee Hadley are the wealthy and troubled heirs of a Texan oilman. Mitch Wayne is Kyle's childhood friend and the son that the elder Jasper Hadley always wanted; Lucy an employee of the company, who will marry Kyle and by whom he would like to have a child. In a film that abounds with phallic symbols, impotence and sterility, alcoholism, infidelity and guilt are at the centre of a drama that starts from the conclusion, announcing itself right from the opening credits, and will all unfold in flashbacks. Another Technicolor milestone as well as the film that revealed the great affinities of Robert Stack and Dorothy Malone (who won the Oscar for best supporting actress) with a director like Sirk. From an idea by Albert Zugsmith, who would shortly thereafter produce Orson Welles' , among others.

Nato con il nome di Hans Detlef Sierck (Amburgo, 1897 – Lugano, 1987), dopo aver trascorso l'infanzia ad Amburgo e in Danimarca si dedicò al teatro in Germania. In seguito venne assunto dall’UFA, esordendo nel lungometraggio con Aprile, Aprile nel 1935. In fuga dalla Germania nazista, come molti altri registi europei, si fece notare con Il pazzo di Hitler (1943) e Temporale d’estate (1944). Da qui in avanti realizzò soprattutto thriller e commedie, con incursioni sporadiche in altri generi. Negli Stati Uniti assunse il nome di Douglas Sirk e dagli anni Cinquanta lavorò sotto contratto alla Universal. Nel 1953 Desiderio di donna inaugurò il grande ciclo di melodrammi che conquistarono pubblico e critica per la loro capacità di esplorare la società americana attraverso uno sguardo antirealista, un’assoluta raffinatezza estetica e un’inedita sensibilità femminista.

Born Hans Detlef Sierk (Hamburg, 1897 – Lugano, 1987), after spending his childhood in Hamburg and Denmark, he devoted himself to theatre in Germany. He was later hired by UFA, making his feature film debut with April, April! in 1935. On the run from Nazi Germany, like many other European directors, he made his mark with Hitler's Madman (1943) and Summer Storm (1944). From here on he made mainly thrillers and comedies, with sporadic forays into other genres. In the United States he took the name Douglas Sirk and by the 1950s he started working under contract at Universal. In 1953, All I Desire opened the great cycle of melodramas that conquered audience and critics through their ability to explore American society through an anti-realist gaze, an absolute aesthetic refinement and an unprecedented feminist sensibility.
