C’è tumulto a Capitol Hill, sede del Senato americano: Robert A. Leffingwell è stato nominato Segretario di Stato dal Presidente degli Stati Uniti, e deve ricevere il consenso maggioritario dai senatori di ogni singolo stato. Le due controparti, a favore e contro, si scontreranno in una battaglia politica estrema che non esclude ricatti e minacce, col rischio che tutto sfoci in tragedia. Il dramma politico come occasione per illustrare l’agone del potere: conflitti, segreti e trasformismo regnano sovrani fra le fila del Senato statunitense. Ghiotta occasione per Otto Preminger per eseguire una successione larghissima e stratificata di ritratti poco accondiscendenti e crudeli, che rendono sempre più complesso comprendere cosa sia giusto e cosa sia sbagliato.

There is turmoil in Capitol Hill, home of the US Senate: Robert A. Leffingwell has been appointed Secretary of State by the President of the United States, and must receive majority consent from the senators of each state. The two counterparts, in favour and against, will clash in an extreme political battle that does not exclude blackmail and threats, with the risk that everything ends in tragedy. Political drama as an opportunity to illustrate the battlefield of power: conflicts, secrets and transformism reign supreme in the ranks of the US Senate. A rich opportunity for Otto Preminger to perform a very large and layered succession of uncomfortable and cruel portraits, which make it increasingly difficult to understand what is right and what is wrong.

Nato nel 1905 nel vecchio Impero Austro-Ungarico a Wischnitz – oggi, Vyzhnytsia in Ucraina –, è stato regista di cinema e di teatro, produttore e attore. Ha diretto più di 35 film, dal 1931 al 1979, attraversando per intero la Golden Age of Hollywood e portando tematiche tabu in USA come stupro e omosessualità sul grande schermo. Candidato al miglior film ai 32° Academy Awards del 1960 con Anatomia di un omicidio (1959) e al premio per la miglior regia agli stessi premi per Vertigine (1944) e Il cardinale (1963), riceve l’Orso di Bronzo al Festival Internazionale del Cinema di Berlino per Carmen Jones (1954) nel 1955. Muore nel 1986, dopo aver girato il suo ultimo film Il fattore umano nel 1979.

Born in the old Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1905 in Wischnitz – today Vyzhnytsia in Ukraine –, he was a film and theatre director, producer and actor. He directed more than 35 films, from 1931 to 1979, spanning the entire Golden Age of Hollywood and bringing taboo themes such as rape and homosexuality on the big screen. Nominated for Best Motion Picture at the 32th Academy Awards in 1960 with Anatomy of a Murder (1959) and for Best Director at the same awards for Laura (1944) and The Cardinal (1963), he received the Bronze Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival for Carmen Jones (1954) in 1955. He died in 1986, after making his last movie, The Human Factor, in 1979.
