Inizia la sua carriera come montatrice, per poi passare alla regia con una serie di cortometraggi, tra i quali la serie per la tv francese Scènes de ménage del 1992. Scopre la forma documentaristica in un workshop agli Ateliers Varan. Tra gli altri, Les Patients (1990), Récréations (1998) e Coûte que coûte (1995) sono quelli a ricevere premi al festival Cinema du Reél e gli ultimi due vengono proiettati nelle sale. Nel 1997 presenta il suo primo lungometraggio di finzione, A Foreign Body, alla Quinzaine des Réalizateurs al Festival di Cannes, dove tornerà nel 2006 con Ça brûle e nel 2008 con Les bureaux de Dieu, con cui vince il premio SACD. Nel 2013 presenta in competizione al Festival di Locarno il film Gare du Nord, insieme al gemello Géographie Humaine, un lungo di finzione e un documentario entrambi sulla stazione Gare du Nord di Parigi. Le concours (2016) è stato premiato come miglior documentario sul cinema al Festival di Venezia. She discovers the practice of documentary filmmaking at the Ateliers Varan workshops. Among others, Les Patients (1990), Recreations (1998) and At All Costs (1995) are those to receive awards at the festival Cinema du Réel and the last two had also a theatrical release. In 1997 she presents his first fiction feature film, A Foreign Body, at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes where she returns first with Ça brûle in 2006 and in 2008 with God’s Offices that won the SACD prize. In 2013 she presents Gare du Nord in competition at the Locarno Film Festival as well as Human Geography, a fiction feature film and a feature length documentary both about the Gare du Nord train station in Paris. The Graduation (2016) was awarded as the best documentary on cinema at the Venice Film Festival. I Want to Talk About Duras (2021) premiered at the San Sebastian Film Festival is his latest film. In 2017 she made a cycle of New Sicilian Lessons at Sicilia Queer.
