Il film si apre con l’artista che descrive un momento di paura e poi prosegue giustapponendo filmati della famiglia di Gibson a scene di disordini globali. Sono presenti anche letture dei poeti americani Eileen Myles e C.A. Conrad – la cui poesia dà il titolo al film – insieme a immagini ritrovate e alla colonna sonora di Pauline Oliveros. Nonostante la paura e l’ansia generate da alcune immagini in sequenza rapida, le tenere scene familiari forniscono uno sfondo narrativo di forza e sopravvivenza.

The film opens with the artist describing a moment of fear and then goes on to juxtapose footage of Gibson’s family with scenes of global unrest. Readings by American poets Eileen Myles and C.A. Conrad – whose poem supplies the title for this film – also feature, alongside found images and soundtrack by Pauline Oliveros. Despite the fear and anxiety generated by some of the fast-moving footage, tender family scenes provide an overriding narrative of strength and survival.

Nata a Londra nel 1978 e residente a Palermo, è artista e filmmaker. I suoi lavori, cortometraggi sperimentali che uniscono video e poesia, sono stati selezionati in molti festival del mondo, come Cannes, Toronto, Londra, New York e Oberhausen. Ha vinto due volte il premio per il miglior cortometraggio al festival internazionale del cinema di Rotterdam nel 2009 e nel 2013. Nel 2015 ha vinto il Baloise Art Prize, il premio Art Basel e Marian McMahon Akimbo per l’autobiografia nel 2019. Ha di recente avuto delle mostre personali al Camden Art Centre di Londra (2019), alla Bergen Kunsthall (2019), al Mercer Union di Toronto (2019) e al KW Institute for Contemporary Art di Berlino (2018). Gibson al momento sta lavorando ad un nuovo lungometraggio con la BBC films di Londra e con il Museo Castelbuono e OKTA films per un adattamento dell’Alcesti ambientato in Sicilia e co-diretto dal suo partner Nick Gibson. Alcesti ha vinto il premio Italian Council 2021.

Born in London in 1978 and based in Palermo, she is an artist and filmmaker. Her works, merging experimental music, film and poetry, have been selected for many film festivals around the world, such as Cannes, Toronto, London, New York and Oberhausen. She has twice won the prize for best short film at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2009 and 2013. In 2015 she won the Baloise Art Prize, Art Basel and in 2019 the Marian McMahon Akimbo Award for Autobiography. She has recently had solo exhibitions at Camden Art Centre in London (2019), Bergen Kunsthall (2019), Mercer Union in Toronto (2019) and KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin (2018). Gibson is currently developing a new feature with BBC films London as well as working with Museo Castelbuono and OKTA films on an adaptation of Alkestis set in Sicily and co-directed with her partner Nick Gordon. Alkestis is the winner of 2021 Italian Council Award.
