Il film esplora i fenomeni di fluidità di genere alla fine del millennio a San Francisco. Ci immergiamo nelle vite di Max Wolf Valerio, che legge dal suo libro, Max: A Man; di Jordy Jones e la sua Net Art; di Texas Tomboy e la sua videoarte; di Stafford che insieme a Jordy Jones organizza Club Confidential, il più famoso evento gender bender a livello mondiale. Incontriamo Hida, una donna intersessuale, e due straordinarie donne biologiche che supportano le persone transgender: la dea del sesso Annie Sprinkle e l'ex modella Tornado. Monika Treut guida coraggiosamente lo spettatore in un nuovo mondo in cui le donne biologiche usano il testosterone per diventare uomini, dove gli uomini si sottopongono a interventi chirurgici per diventare donne e dove alcuni uomini e donne scelgono di esistere al limite del genere come intersessuali.

The film explores phenomena of gender fluidity at the end of the millennium in San Francisco. We take excursions into the lives of Max Wolf Valerio, who reads from his book, Max: A Man; Jordy Jones and his Net Art; Texas Tomboy and his video art; Stafford, who together with Jordy Jones, organizes Club Confidential, the world’s leading gender bender event. We meet Hida, an intersexed woman, and two extraordinary biological women who support transgender people: sex goddess Annie Sprinkle and ex-model Tornado. Monika Treut boldly leads the viewer into a brave new world where biological women use testosterone to achieve maleness, where men have surgery to become women, and where some men and women choose to exist on the boundaries of gender as intersexuals.

Nata a Mönchengladbach, in Germania, nel 1954, ha conseguito un dottorato di ricerca in Letteratura a Marburgo nel 1984. Ha iniziato a lavorare nella produzione video nel 1976 e ha fondato la Hyena Films con Elfi Mikesch nel 1984. I suoi lungometraggi e documentari hanno fatto la storia del cinema queer per oltre 35 anni. La storia d'amore Seduction: The Cruel Woman (1985), il melodramma sessuale Virgin Machine (1988) e la commedia My Father is Coming (1991) sono stati seguiti da una serie di documentari tra cui il pluripremiato trans-futuristico Gendernauts. A Journey Through Shifting Identities (1999). I suoi film sono stati presentati alla Berlinale 13 volte; nel 2017 ha ricevuto il Teddy Award alla carriera. Born in Mönchengladbach, Germany in 1954, she completed a PhD in Literature at Marburg in 1984. She began working with video in 1976 and founded Hyena Films with Elfi Mikesch in 1984. Her feature and documentary films have shaped queer cinema for over 35 years. The love story Seduction: The Cruel Woman (1985), the sex melodrama Virgin Machine (1988) and the comedy My Father is Coming (1991) were followed by a series of documentaries including the multi-award-winning trans-futuristic Gendernauts. A Journey Through Shifting Identities (1999). Her films have featured at the Berlinale 13 times; in 2017, she received the Teddy Award for her lifetime achievement. She also teaches at universities in California and New York and, since 2018, has been Deputy Professor of Media at the University of Hildesheim. Her last film Genderation was presented at Berlinale in 2021.
