Venti anni dopo Gendernauts (1999), Monika Treut torna a incontrare i protagonisti di quel film, una generazione di persone trans che ha trovato il proprio equilibrio ma che non ha smesso di riflettere su sé stessa e la società mutante e che lo fa con un'energia che continua ad avere un impatto ancora oggi. Il film è un dialogo a più voci sull'evoluzione del movimento e delle politiche LGBTQ+ o su temi come identità, normalizzazione, ecologia o sulla trasformazione di San Francisco da epicentro dell'arte e della controcultura queer a città gentrificata. Ma soprattutto, Genderation è una rappresentazione intima delle identità mutevoli e del viaggio di coloro che lottano per superare il concetto di binarismo e di vivere le loro vite in modo autentico.

Twenty years after Gendernauts (1999), Monika Treut seeks out the protagonists of that film, a generation of trans people who have found their balance, but who keeps on reflecting on themselves and the mutant society and how their energy continues to have an impact today. The film is multi-voiced dialogue on the evolution of the LGBTQ+ movement and policies or on issues such as identity, normalization, ecology, or on the transformation of San Francisco from being a hotbed of counterculture to a gentrified city. But above all, Genderation is an intimate portrayal of shifting identities and of the journey of those who are struggling to move past the concept of binarism and to live their most authentic lives.

Nata a Mönchengladbach, in Germania, nel 1954, ha conseguito un dottorato di ricerca in Letteratura a Marburgo nel 1984. Ha iniziato a lavorare nella produzione video nel 1976 e ha fondato la Hyena Films con Elfi Mikesch nel 1984. I suoi lungometraggi e documentari hanno fatto la storia del cinema queer per oltre 35 anni. La storia d'amore Seduction: The Cruel Woman (1985), il melodramma sessuale Virgin Machine (1988) e la commedia My Father is Coming (1991) sono stati seguiti da una serie di documentari tra cui il pluripremiato trans-futuristico Gendernauts. Born in Mönchengladbach, Germany in 1954, she completed a PhD in Literature at Marburg in 1984. She began working with video in 1976 and founded Hyena Films with Elfi Mikesch in 1984. Her feature and documentary films have shaped queer cinema for over 35 years. The love story Seduction: The Cruel Woman (1985), the sex melodrama Virgin Machine (1988) and the comedy My Father is Coming (1991) were followed by a series of documentaries including the multi-award-winning trans-futuristic Gendernauts. A Journey Through Shifting Identities (1999). Her films have featured at the Berlinale 13 times; in 2017, she received the Teddy Award for her lifetime achievement. She also teaches at universities in California and New York and, since 2018, has been Deputy Professor of Media at the University of Hildesheim. Her last film Genderation was presented at Berlinale in 2021.
