Johnny, dieci anni, si sente un estraneo nella sua famiglia e nel suo quartiere periferico nella Francia orientale. È sensibile, intelligente e interessato a ogni genere di argomenti per la sua giovane età. Le cose cambiano quando un nuovo insegnante arrivato dalla metropoli, Mr Adamski, subentra nella sua classe. Il giovane e sofisticato insegnante ha fiducia nelle sue capacità e lo spinge ad esplorare nuovi mondi. E Johnny ne subisce il fascino... Samuel Theis affronta il tema del determinismo sociale che ci influenza fin dalla nascita e della necessità di partire e di rivendicare uno spazio per sé stessi. E filmare l'infanzia diventa l'occasione per esplorare le “prime volte” del risveglio emotivo, intellettuale e sessuale che è alla base di ogni desiderio di emancipazione.

Ten year-old Johnny stands out from his family and his neighborhood in Eastern France. He's sensitive, intelligent and interested in all kinds of things way beyond his years. Things change when a new teacher, fresh from the big city, takes over Johnny's class. Mr. Adamski believes in Johnny and wants to open a new world to him. The sophisticated young teacher also intrigues the boy. Samuel Theis tackles the theme of social determinism by which we are all marked from birth and the need to leave and to claim a space for ourselves. And filming childhood involves exploring the first times of an emotional, intellectual and sexual awakening which nourishes the desire for emancipation.

Nato nel 1978, Samuel Theis ha studiato recitazione all'Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Techniques du Théâtre. Successivamente ha partecipato ai laboratori di sceneggiatura de La Fémis prima di co-dirigere il suo primo film, Party Girl (2014) con Marie Amachoukeli e Claire Burger. Tra documentario e finzione, Party Girl è stato il film di apertura di Un Certain Regard al Festival di Cannes e ha vinto la Caméra d'Or. Samuel Theis è anche attore e regista teatrale. Petite Nature è il suo secondo lungometraggio che nel 2021 è stato selezionato nella 61° edizione della Semaine de la Critique di Cannes e presentato nella sezione Alice nella Città della Festa del cinema di Roma.

Born in 1978, Samuel Theis studied acting at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Techniques du Théâtre. He then got into La Fémis scriptwriting workshop before co-directing his first film, Party Girl (2014) with Marie Amachoukeli and Claire Burger. This film, that toys with the fine line between documentary and fiction, was the opening film of Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Caméra d’Or. Samuel Theis is also an actor and a theatre director. Softie is his second feature film that in 2021 was selected in the 61st edition of the Critic’s Week at Cannes and presented in the Alice nella Città section of the Rome Film Fest.
