Classe 1959, regista indipendente originario di Toronto, inizia a realizzare film nel 1980 e diventa in poco tempo protagonista di punta della scena di cinema sperimentale canadese. I temi fondamentali delle sue opere riguardano l’epidemia di AIDS, la malattia e i travagli personali messi sempre in prospettiva rispetto alla contemporanea società delle immagini. Due cortometraggi, Frank’s Cock (1993) e Letters from Home (1996) hanno vinto il premio al miglior cortometraggio al Festival del Cinema di Toronto. Buffalo Death Mask (2013) ha vinto il premio del miglior cortometraggio nella sezione Queer Short del Sicilia Queer filmfest 2014. Da allora altri suoi lavori sono stati presentati al festival siciliano, tra cui Judy vs. Capitalism (2021) nel 2021 nella sezione Panorama Queer. Nel 2017 ha ricevuto il Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts dal Canada Council of Arts. Born in 1959, independent director originally from Toronto, he began making films in 1980 and shortly became a leading figure in the Canadian experimental cinema scene. The fundamental themes of his works concern the AIDS epidemic, illness and personal travails always placed in perspective to the contemporary society of images. Two short films, Frank’s Cock (1993) and Letters from Home (1996) won the Best Short Film Award at the Toronto Film Festival. Buffalo Death Mask (2013) won the award for Best Short Film in the Queer Short section of the Sicilia Queer filmfest 2014. Since then, his other works have been presented at the Sicilian festival, including Judy vs. Capitalism (2021) in 2021 in the Panorama Queer section. In 2017 he received the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts from the Canada Council of Arts. In 2019 the Efebo D’Oro Film Festival dedicates a retrospective to him and gives him the New Visions Award as a lifetime recognition.
