Louise de… è una donna ricca ed elegante della Francia di fine Ottocento. Ama i suoi gioielli, ma deve decidere quale vendere per ripagare in gran segreto un debito. Di tutti quelli che possiede sceglie di vendere gli orecchini che le ha regalato il marito, André de… Ma quando André scopre la verità, e il fato restituisce gli orecchini a Louise tramite la storia d’amore extraconiugale con il barone Donati, il destino tragico interrompe bruscamente il nuovo sogno d’amore. Un classico intramontabile di Max Ophüls, un melodramma barocco di amore e intrecci sullo sfondo della Francia della Belle Époque, fra balli, duelli e un senso ottocentesco dell’onore che va lentamente infrangendosi contro la crudele incontrollabilità dei sentimenti.

Louise de… is a rich and elegant woman in the late 19th-century France. She loves her jewels, but she has to decide which one to sell to secretly repay a debt. Of all those she owns, she chooses to sell the earrings that her husband, André De… gave her as a gift. But when André discovers the truth, and fate returns the earrings to Louise through the extramarital love affair with Baron Donati, tragedy abruptly interrupts the new dream of love. A timeless classic by Max Ophüls, a baroque melodrama of love and plots set during French Belle Époque, amidst dances, duels and a 19th-century sense of honour that breaks up against the cruel uncontrollability of feelings.

Pseudonimo di Maximilian Oppenheimer, nasce in Germania nel 1902. È regista e co-sceneggiatore della maggior parte dei suoi lavori, da Yoshiwara. Il quartiere delle geishe (1937) a Lettera da una sconosciuta (1948), da Il piacere e l’amore (1950) a Lola Montès (1955). Ha lavorato fra Germania, Francia e Italia. La Seconda guerra mondiale lo costrinse a emigrare negli Stati Uniti nel 1941, dove realizza quattro lungometraggi fra il 1947 e il 1949. Viene premiato a Venezia nel 1934 per La signora di tutti e nel 1950 con il premio alla miglior sceneggiatura per Il piacere e l’amore. Per questo e per Il piacere (1952) riceve anche due candidature agli Academy Awards americani. Il Festival Internazionale del Cinema di Berlino gli conferisce un premio alla carriera postumo nel 1966. Dal 1980 dà il nome al Max Ophüls Preis Film Festival di Saarbrücken, sua città natale.

Pseudonym of Maximilian Oppenheimer, he is born in Germany in 1902. He is the director and co-writer of most of his works, from Yoshiwara (1937) to Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948), from La Ronde (1950) to Lola Montès (1955). He has worked in Germany, France and Italy. The Second World War forced him to emigrate to the United States in 1941, where he made four feature films between 1947 and 1949. He was awarded in Venice in 1934 for Everybody’s Woman and in 1950 with the Prize for Best Screenplay for La Ronde. For La Ronde and Le Plaisir (1952) he also received two nominations for the American Academy Awards. The Berlin International Film Festival awarded him a posthumous Award for his body of work in 1966. Since 1980 Max Ophüls Preis Film Festival in Saarbrücken, his hometown, is named after him.
