Mikey Saber, ex pornostar sulla quarantina, ha deciso di lasciare Los Angeles e di tornare in Texas. Quasi senza un soldo, è costretto a riparare a casa della suocera e dalla ex moglie, Lexi, che lo accoglie nella speranza di estorcergli un po’ di soldi e di poter magari ricostruire una relazione coniugale. Ma Mikey, che per sopravvivere ha cominciato a spacciare marijuana tra gli operai di una fabbrica locale, incontra e comincia a frequentare la giovane Strawberry, cameriera in un negozio di dolci, e sogna un trionfante ritorno nell’industria del porno.
Sean Baker si conferma un abile narratore della provincia statunitense più profonda, quella più lontana dal sogno americano, riuscendo a mostrare con leggerezza le distorsioni narcisiste di un mondo frustrato che costituisce il terreno di coltura del consenso trumpiano.

Mikey Saber, a former porn star in his forties, decides to leave Los Angeles and to come back in Texas. Nearly penniless, he’s forced to return home at his mother-in-law’s and his wife’s, Lexi, who welcomes him hoping to extort some money, and maybe to recreate a conjugal relationship. But Mikey, who starts making some money dealing marijuana between local factory workers, comes across Strawberry, a waitress at a donut shop, and with her he dreams about a triumphant return in porn industry.
Sean Baker shows to be again a clever teller of the deepest US province, the furthest one from the American Dream, showing in a comedic approach the narcissistic distortion of a frustrated world that creates indirectly the roots for the Trumpian consensus.

Sean Baker (1971) è un regista, direttore della fotografia, produttore, sceneggiatore e montatore americano. Ha studiato alla New York University e ha conseguito la laurea in Film Studies. Come regista, avvicina lo spettatore ai suoi personaggi. Per fare questo svolge una meticolosa ricerca con un approccio rispettoso e responsabile verso i suoi personaggi e un approccio poco ortodosso alla regia.
Ha diretto sei lungometraggi negli ultimi due decenni, tra cui Tangerine (2015) e The Florida Project (2017), presentato in anteprima alla Quinzaine des Realizateurs al Festival di Cannes. Red Rocket (2021) è stato presentato in anteprima anche al Festival di Cannes 2021, in concorso per la Palma d'Oro.

Sean Baker (1971) is an American film director, cinematographer, producer, screenwriter and editor. He studied at New York University and received his BA in Film Studies. As a filmmaker, he takes the viewer close to his characters. To do this, he carries out meticulous research with a respectful and responsible approach to his characters, but he often neglects the rules of film.
He has directed six feature films over the past two decades, including Tangerine (2015) and The Florida Project (2017) which premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival. Red Rocket (2021) also premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, in competition for the Palme d'Or.
