Il bel Candide si aggira per le strade notturne dei dintorni di Lisbona con la sua decappottabile. Una volta trovate ragazze da sedurre, le strozza prontamente e si disfa dei loro cadaveri gettandoli nelle acque del Tago. Una sera, di ritorno da un nuovo adescamento e con un cadavere nel portabagagli, si imbatte in una ragazza che si è appena gettata da un balcone. Invece di soccorrerla le dà un bacio appassionato durante il quale lei esala l’ultimo respiro. Un gruppo di curiosi e di giornalisti immortalano l’evento rendendo Candide un divo del web, ma questo non basterà a interrompere la sua scia di sangue. Eros, morte, iconoclastia ed estetica kitsch figlie del cinema di genere degli anni ’70 convivono in questo mediometraggio firmato da Carlos Conceição, dove la seduzione fa costantemente coppia con l’omicidio, e la depravazione con un’estetica e una narrazione estreme, folli, ironiche e accattivanti.

The handsome Candide roams the night streets of Lisbon in his convertible. Once he finds girls to seduce, he promptly strangles them and disposes of their corpses by throwing them into the waters of the Tagus. One evening, on his way back from picking up another girl and with a corpse in the boot, he comes across a girl who has just thrown herself off a balcony. Instead of helping her, he gives her a passionate kiss, during which she breathes her last. A group of onlookers and journalists immortalize the event, making Candide a web star, but this is not enough to interrupt his trail of bloodshed. Eros, death, iconoclasm and kitsch aesthetics, distinctive traits of 1970s genre cinema, coexist in this medium-length film by Carlos Conceição, where seduction is constantly paired with murder, and depravity is seen through the lenses of an extreme, crazy, ironic and captivating aesthetic and narrative.

Nato in Angola durante la Guerra Fredda, ha vissuto tra il deserto del sud e il Portogallo fino a quando non si è iscritto alla Scuola di Cinema di Lisbona nel 2002. In precedenza si era laureato in Letteratura inglese del Romanticismo. Il suo primo cortometraggio, Carne, ha vinto il premio come Miglior Nuovo Talento all’Indie Lisboa nel 2010, mentre Versailles (2013) è stato presentato in anteprima al Festival di Locarno e Coelho Mau (2017) ha segnato il suo ritorno alla Semaine de la Critique di Cannes tre anni dopo il suo ingresso in competizione con Boa Noite Cinderela. Retrospettive complete dei suoi lavori hanno avuto luogo alla Cinémathèque di Parigi e all’Amiens Film Festival. Il suo lungometraggio Flores para Godzilla – un surreale road movie adolescenziale su amanti dannati, piscine e foreste pietrificate – è in fase di missaggio audio, e sta lavorando a un nuovo progetto intitolato Besta: un biopic allegorico sull’asinello della natività che trae spunto da Lucio Apuleio, Robert Louis Stevenson e Robert Bresson. Nel 2019 Serpentario è stato presentato alla 69esima edizione della Berlinale nella sezione Forum.

Born in Angola during the Cold War, he lived between the southern desert and Portugal until he went to Lisbon’s Film School in Lisbon in 2002. He had previously majored in English Literature of the Romanticism. His first short film The Flesh was awarded Best New Talent at Indie Lisboa in 2010, while Versailles (2013) premiered at the Locarno Film Festival and Bad Bunny (2017) marked his return to the Cannes Critic’s Week three years after his entry in competition with Goodnight Cinderella. He also had complete retrospectives of his work at the French Cinémathèque in Paris and at the Amiens Film Festival. While mixing his feature film Flowers for Godzilla – a surreal teenage road movie about doomed lovers, swimming-pools and petrified forests – Carlos is working on a project called Beast: an allegorical biopic of the nativity donkey which inherits from Lucius Apuleius, Robert Louis Stevenson and Robert Bresson. In 2019 Serpentarius was presented at the 69th Berlinale in the Forum section.
