Nato a Shanghai nel 1958, è un regista, sceneggiatore e produttore di Hong Kong, dove è emigrato da bambino. Born in Shanghai in 1958, he is a film director, screenwriter and producer based in Hong Kong, where he emigrated as a child. He began a career as a screenwriter for soap operas before transitioning to directing with his debut, As Tears Go By (1988). Days of Being Wild (1990) was his first venture away from the crime trend in Hong Kong cinema. He was then absorbed with the time-consuming and exhausting production of Ashes of Time (1994) that radically changed the wuxia genre. He subsequently directed Chungking Express (1994) which catapulted him to international prominence. He consolidated his worldwide reputation with Fallen Angels (1995) and Happy Together (1997), for which he won Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival. The 2000 drama In the Mood for Love, revered for its lush visuals and subtle storytelling, concretely established his trademark filmmaking style. Among his other work are 2046 (2004) and The Grandmaster (2013), both of which received awards worldwide. In 2007 he directed his first feature in English, My Blueberry Nights that marked the end of the collaboration with his longtime cinematographer Christopher Doyle.
