Tre anni dopo la morte inspiegabile di sua nipote Kalla, Angelo Madsen Minax torna nella sua città natale per girare un film sulle lacune del sistema giudiziario. Sua sorella Jesse, che aveva trovato una temporanea stabilità come madre, dopo un’adolescenza complicata e problemi di dipendenza, è sospettata dalle autorità di essere responsabile, insieme al compagno David, della morte di Kalla.
Usando video in VHS e in super 8, riprese dei familiari e ritratti di paesaggi, il regista riesce a offrire allo spettatore una riflessione lirica e imprevedibile che abbraccia un ampio arco temporale e affronta i temi della depressione, della violenza domestica, della maternità e della mascolinità transgender per poi trasformarsi in una terapia familiare catartica, un'opportunità per collaborare e creare insieme una versione personale di giustizia in costante evoluzione.

Three years after the unexplained death of his niece Kalla, Angelo Madsen Minax returns to his rural hometown to make a film about a faulty judicial system. His sister Jesse, who had found temporary stability as a mother after a difficult youth, is suspected by the authorities of being responsible, along with her partner David, for the death of Kalla.
Using the family's VHS and super 8 home movies, staged actions, and landscape portraits the film weaves an altogether lyrical and unpredictable reflection that spans a broad arc, negotiating the topics of depression, domestic violence, motherhood and transgender masculinity in what turns out to be cathartic family therapy, an opportunity to collaborate, and create together their own version of transformative justice.

Nato nel 1983 a Petoskey, Michigan, è un regista e artista interdisciplinare. Ha studiato arte alla School of the Art Institute di Chicago e alla Northwestern University. Il suo lavoro, che comprende documentari e film di finzione, performance sonore e musicali, testi e installazioni multimediali, è stato presentato all'European Media Art Festival, al Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, all'Anthology Film Archives di New York e in numerosi festival cinematografici.

Born in 1983 in Petoskey, Michigan, he is a filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist. He studied art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and at Northwestern University. His work, which encompasses documentary, fiction, sound and music performances, text and media installations, has been presented at the European Media Art Festival, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, in the Anthology Film Archives in New York and at numerous film festivals.
