Il difficile rapporto tra madre e figlio e le conseguenze psicologiche delle violenze subite dal ragazzo sono al centro di quest’opera.
In una coraggiosa e sentita lettera cinematografica a sua madre, il regista Amin Maher rivela il più doloroso dei segreti d'infanzia, esplorando la confusione di genere, la sessualità, il senso di colpa e la repressione in relazione alla violenza e all'identità. Letter to my Mother cerca di infrangere i tabù e spingere i confini – sia sociali che personali, e creare la vita e l'arte dalle più oscure esperienze. Ci sono momenti in cui il cinema stesso sembra coinvolto in questa difficile storia, quasi tenendo traccia degli abusi che sono iniziati nel momento esatto in cui Maher appariva in Ten (2002) di Abbas Kiarostami, incentrato proprio sul rapporto turbolento tra lui e la madre.

In a bold and heartfelt cinematic letter to his mother, the filmmaker Amin Maher reveals the most painful of childhood secrets. The film explores gender confusion, sexuality, guilt and repression in relation with violence and identity. Letter to my Mother is an attempt to break taboos and push boundaries – both social and personal, and to create life and art out of the darkest experiences. There are times when cinema itself seems implicated in this difficult story, charting abuse that began at the exact time he was appearing in Abbas Kiarostami’s Ten (2002) which featured the real-life relationship between his mother and Amin.

Nato a Teheran nel 1992, è un regista e poeta iraniano queer, le cui opere affrontano i temi del genere e della sessualità in rapporto alla violenza e all'identità. Ha iniziato la sua attività cinematografica come attore principale in Ten (2002) di Kiarostami. Nel 2010 ha iniziato a studiare all'Università di Teheran prima di essere arrestato per le sue attività politiche. In seguito ha lasciato l'Iran per studiare cinema alla Limkokwing University in Malesia e ha diretto diversi cortometraggi. Il suo primo cortometraggio di finzione Sweet Gin and Cold Wine è stato nominato miglior cortometraggio al 21° Oldenburg International Film Festival in Germania e ha vinto un premio al Creative Open International Film Festival (IOFF) nel 2016. Nel 2019 ha montato il lungometraggio documentario A Moon for my Father diretto da Mania Akbari e Douglas White. Attualmente sta studiando regia alla Konrad Wolf Film University di Babelsberg e sta lavorando a un lungometraggio documentario, Libido, che è stato selezionato al CPH:FORUM, Copenhagen International Documentary Festival nel 2019.

Born in Teheran in 1992, he is an Iranian queer filmmaker and poet whose works deal with the themes of gender and sexuality in relation to violence and identity. He began his cinematic activity as the main actor in Abbas Kiarostami’s Ten (2002). In 2010, he began studying at Tehran University before being arrested for his political activities. He subsequently left Iran to study filmmaking at Limkokwing University in Malaysia and directed several short films. His first fictional short film Sweet Gin and Cold Wine was nominated for the best short film at the 21st Oldenburg International Film Festival in Germany and won an award of recognition at the Creative Open International Film Festival (IOFF) in 2016. In 2019, he edited the feature documentary film A Moon For my Father directed by Mania Akbari and Douglas White. He is currently studying for his MA in Directing (Regie) at Konrad Wolf Film University of Babelsberg and working on a documentary feature film, Libido, which was selected at CPH:FORUM, Copenhagen International Documentary Festival in 2019.
