Nato nel 1957 è un regista malese naturalizzato taiwanese, cresciuto in una famiglia di origini cinesi. È uno degli autori più significativi del cinema mondiale e figura chiave della seconda ondata del Nuovo Cinema Taiwanese. Nel 1977 si trasferisce a Taipei dove studia Arte drammatica presso la Chinese Culture University. Si dedica alla stesura e alla direzione di alcune opere teatrali per poi approdare alla televisione come sceneggiatore e regista. In occasione di un casting incontra Lee Kang-sheng che, da quel momento, reciterà in ogni suo film. Esordisce nel 1992 con I ribelli del dio neon, presentato a Torino l’anno seguente. Nel 1994 si aggiudica il Leone d’oro al miglior film con Vive l’amour. Da allora è diventato una presenza fissa nei più importanti festival, tra cui Venezia, Cannes, Berlino, Toronto, New York, Tokyo. Altri prestigiosi premi sono arrivati, tra gli altri, per Il fiume, Orso d’argento nel 1997; Il buco e Goodbye, Dragon Inn, premio FIPRESCI rispettivamente nel 1998 e nel 2003; Il gusto dell’anguria, Orso d’argento per l’eccezionale contributo artistico e premio FIPRESCI nel 2005.

Born in 1957, he is a Malaysian-born and Taiwan-based director, raised in a family of Chinese origins. He is one of the world cinema’s most significant auteurs and a key figure of the “Second New Wave” of Taiwanese Cinema. In 1977, he moved to Taipei and enrolled in Chinese Culture University, majoring in Dramatic Art. He then started writing and directing several plays and, soon after, he went on to work as a director and writer for television. On the occasion of a casting, he encountered Lee Kang-sheng who, from that moment, would star in all of his films. He made his debut in 1992 with Rebels of the Neon God, presented at the Turin Film Festival the following year. In 1994 he won the Golden Lion with Vive l’amour. Since then, he became a regular at the most renowned film festival, including Venice, Cannes, Berlin, Toronto, New York, Tokyo. Other prestigious awards were given, among others, for The River, Silver Bear in 1997; The Hole as well as Goodbye, Dragon Inn, FIPRESCI Award respectively in 1998 and in 2003; The Wayward Cloud, Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution and FIPRESCI Award both in 2005.
