Fermo immagine su un quadro di arte bizantina, forma espressiva che nacque con la scissione dell’Impero Romano d’Oriente e d’Occidente. Anche il matrimonio a cui partecipa Yana da invitata si rivela profondamente scisso. C’è infatti la sala principale dove si svolgono i festeggiamenti, con Yana che si sottopone alle foto di rito, ascolta i tronfi proclami di auguri agli sposi e intrattiene suo malgrado stucchevoli conversazioni con familiari e invitati. C’è poi il lato oscuro del matrimonio, il ripostiglio, il sottoscala, dove Yana fugge tra una pausa e l’altra per incontrare segretamente una cameriera incrociata in sala.
Luce piatta e fredda in sala, densa e torbida nel guardaroba, per un racconto con originali spunti visivi che rivisita e problematizza, anche nella danza, le abituali wedding comedy.

Freeze-frame on a picture of Byzantine art, an expressive form that was born with the split of the Roman Empire of the East and the West. Even the marriage to which Yana goes as a guest turns out to be profoundly divided. There is in fact the main hall where the celebrations take place, with Yana who undergoes the usual photos, listens to the conceited exchanges of good wishes to the newlyweds and entertains clumsy conversations with her relatives and guests. Then there is the dark side of marriage, the closet, the basement, where Yana escapes between breaks to secretly meet a waitress she had crossed in the hall.
A flat and cold light in the room, dense and murky in the wardrobe, for a story with original visual cues that revisit and problematize, even in dance, the usual wedding comedy.

Ha iniziato la sua carriera cinematografica come attrice protagonista nel film bulgaro Christmas Tree Upside Down, che si è aggiudicato il Karlovy Vary Jury Prize 2006. Per la successiva interpretazione in Crayfish del 2009 ha ricevuto il premio come migliore attrice non protagonista dalla Bulgarian Film Academy. Nel 2013 ha completato un master in regia alla London Film School, durante il quale ha scritto e diretto quattro cortometraggi. Uno di questi è Happy Birthday Mom, del 2012, che affronta il tema dell’inazione in una famiglia. Ha diretto nel 2014 Heart of Lead, girato tra Bulgaria, India e Italia. Ha diretto Whole nel 2018, mentre in Better Nature, appena ultimato, torna al ruolo di attrice. Oggi è anche membro fondatore del laboratorio di registi Zhiva.

She began her film career as a leading actress in the Bulgarian film Christmas Tree Upside Down, which won the Karlovy Vary Jury Prize 2006. For her subsequent interpretation in Crayfish in 2009 she received the award for best supporting actress from the Bulgarian Film Academy. In 2013 she completed a master's degree in directing at the London Film School, during which she wrote and directed four short films. One of these is Happy Birthday Mom, from 2012, which addresses the issue of inaction in a family. In 2014 she directed Heart of Lead, shot in Bulgaria, India and Italy. She directed Whole in 2018, almost at the same time Better Nature, a film in which she returned to the role of actress, was about to be released. Today she is also a founding member of the Zhiva directors' workshop.
