È un cineasta e attivista molto noto in Cina, schierato a difesa dei diritti LGBT. Si è laureato alla prestigiosa Beijing Film Academy ed è l’autore del libro Happy Together: Complete Record of a Hundred Queer Films. Si tratta del primo libro mai pubblicato in Cina sul cinema queer. I suoi film affrontano temi molto controversi nella Repubblica Popolare, come il matrimonio omosessuale (New Beijing, New Marriage), l’identità transgender (Be a Woman), il femminismo (The VaChina Monologues) e la quotidianità delle famiglie LGBT. Sono opere che hanno innescato ampi dibattiti in patria, film invisi alle autorità cinesi che, ad esempio, hanno rimosso da internet il corto Mama Rainbow, visualizzato da milioni di utenti. Ha in seguito intentato e vinto una causa contro il governo cinese. Organizzatore per dieci anni del Queer Film Fest di Pechino e fondatore del campo di addestramento video della Queer University, ha vinto nel 2011 il Prism Prize di Hong Kong e ha partecipato al concorso della Berlinale Talents del 2017.

He is a well-known filmmaker and activist in China, deployed to defend LGBT rights. He graduated from the prestigious Beijing Film Academy and is the author of the book entitled Happy Together: Complete Record of a Hundred Queer Films. This is the first book ever published in China on queer cinema. His films deal with very controversial issues in the People's Republic, such as homosexual marriage (New Beijing, New Marriage), transgender identity (Be a Woman), feminism (The VaChina Monologues) and everyday life of LGBT families. These works have triggered widespread debates in his country, and aroused hostility in Chinese authorities, which removed the short Mama Rainbow from the internet, which had been viewed by millions of users. He later filed and won a lawsuit against the government. A board member for a decade of the Queer Film Fest of Beijing as well as founder of the video training camp of Queer University, he won the Prism Prize of Hong Kong in 2011 and competed at the Berlinale Talents 2017.
