Tan Wei Keong evoca alcuni suoi ricordi: ora veglia la madre moribonda nella sua camera da letto; ora si ritrova a un passo dall’altare, accanto al suo promesso sposo, Stephen; ora visualizza una spiaggia sferzata dal vento e affollata da misteriose figure femminili.
Eros e Thanatos si confondono attraverso percorsi poco delineati e per questo affascinanti, grumi color pastello che si mescolano, si affastellano, sembrano sbiadire come la memoria per poi rinascere attraverso delicati disegni e nuove figure cariche di senso. Poetico, intimista, biografico lavoro, frutto di una tecnica che unisce animazioni, disegni e fotografie nel tentativo di sondare la stessa identità dell’autore, divenendo in realtà una più ampia riflessione sull’enigma della felicità.

Tan Wei Keong evokes some of his memories: now he watches over his dying mother who lies in her bedroom; now he finds himself one step away from the altar, next to his betrothed, Stephen; now he visualizes a beach lashed by the wind and crowded with mysterious female figures.
Eros and Thanatos merge into little outlined paths: a fascinating blend of pastel-colored lumps, piled up together, that seem to fade like memory and then be reborn through delicate, meaningful drawings and shapes. A poetic, intimate, biographical work, the result of a technique that combines animations, drawings and photographs in an attempt to probe the identity of the author, while actually becoming a wider reflection on the enigma of happiness.

Nato a Singapore nel 1984, ha trovato il suo mezzo espressivo nell’animazione fin quando si è iscritto alla Nanyang Technological University con una borsa di studio vinta presso l’Autorità per lo sviluppo dei media di Singapore. Il suo primo film in stop-motion, White, ha ricevuto lo Special Achievement Award al Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) del 2007. Il suo film di diploma, Hush Baby, ha ricevuto il premio speciale del SGIFF nel 2009. Il suo film più recente è Kingdom, selezionato alla Berlinale del 2019 e voluto come film di apertura del SGIFF 2018. Between Us Two ha ricevuto il premio come miglior cortometraggio di Singapore al SGIFF 2017 e il Grand Jury Prize Documentary Short all’Outfest di Los Angeles 2018. I suoi film sono stati selezionati in numerosi festival cinematografici di tutto il mondo, compresi quelli di Annecy, Zagabria, Edimburgo, Toronto, Stoccarda e Londra. Oltre ai film, ha anche creato un’installazione d’arte pubblica basata su interazioni umane presentata in Francia al Made in Asia Festival 2015.

Born in Singapore in 1984, he found his expressive medium in animation until he joined Nanyang Technological University with a scholarship won at the Singapore Media Development Authority. His first stop-motion film, White, received the Special Achievement Award at the 2007 Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF). His graduation film, Hush Baby, received the SGIFF special award in 2009. His most recent film is Kingdom, selected for the 2019 Berlinale and intended as the opening film of the SGIFF 2018. Between Us Two received the award for Best Singapore Short Film at SGIFF 2017 and the Grand Jury Prize Documentary Short at the Los Angeles 2018 Outfest. His films have been selected at numerous film festivals around the world, including those in Annecy, Zagreb, Edinburgh, Toronto, Stuttgart and London. He also created a public art installation based on human interactions presented in France at the Made in Asia Festival 2015.
