Il compositore minimalista Tony Conrad lo ricorda perfettamente: da bambino era molto introverso. Davanti alla cinepresa di Marie Losier è tutto il contrario: si trasforma in personaggi stravaganti ed eccentrici, giocando con i suoi piedi o con delle arance, cucinando delle pellicole cinematografiche per metterle in conserva o ancora ballando follemente en travesti. Il grande artista e musicista statunitense, ispiratore della musica dei Velvet Underground, racconta la sua vita, gli spettacoli di marionette che faceva con sua madre, la scoperta del violino, la sua amicizia con La Monte Young, il suo incontro con Jack Smith. Marie Losier offre non soltanto un ritratto dolce e divertente del suo amico Tony Conrad, ma anche un’ode all’amicizia e ai piccoli momenti di fantasia che sono il sale della vita.

Minimalist composer Tony Conrad remembers that as a child, he was much introverted. Yet, in front of Marie Losier’s camera, it is hard to believe. Indeed, he turns into odd and eccentric characters, playing with his feet or oranges, cooking reels and canning them, or crazily dancing dressed as a woman. The great American artist and musician, who inspired the Velvet Undergound, tells about his life, the puppet shows he used to do with his mother, his discovery of violin, his friendship with La Monte Young, and his meeting with Jack Smith. Marie Losier offers not only a sweet and funny portrait of her friend Tony Conrad, but also an ode to friendship and to the tiny moments of creativity that amount to the salt of life.

Nata nel 1972, ha studiato letteratura a Parigi e belle arti a New York, dove ha conosciuto le figure più importanti della scena underground. Definita da Nicole Brenez come “una bambina scappata della scena delle piume di Zero in condotta” di Jean Vigo, ha prodotto un corpus di opere che documentano la vita quotidiana di artisti d’avanguardia in un modo onirico e poetico. I suoi cortometraggi sono ritratti documentari dei suoi amici registi, musicisti e compositori quali Alan Vega, Jonas Mekas, Peaches, George Kuchar, Guy Maddin, Richard Foreman, Tony Conrad e Genesis P-Orridge. Il suo primo lungometraggio, The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye ha vinto una decina di premi, mentre il suo secondo Cassandro, the Exotico! è stato proiettato al Festival di Cannes. I suoi film sono sovente proiettati in musei come la Tate Modern (Londra), il Moma (NYC), il Centro Pompidou (Parigi) e il Whitney Museum (NYC).

Born in 1972, she has studied literature in Paris and fine arts in New York, where she met most important figures from the underground scene. Described by Nicole Brenez as “a child escaped from the feathers scene in Zero for Conduct” by Jean Vigo, she is the author of works that document the daily life of avantgarde artists in a dream-like and poetic way. Her short films are portraits of her director, musician and composer friends, such as Alan Vega, Jonas Mekas, Peaches, George Kuchar, Guy Maddin, Richard Foreman, Tony Conrad and Genesis P-Orridge. Her first feature film The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye has been awarded a dozen of prices, while her second feature Cassandro, the Exotico! has been shown at the Cannes Film Festival. Her films are regularly presented in such museums as the Tate Modern (London), the Moma (NYC), the Pompidou Center (Paris) and the Whitney Museum (NYC).
